My favorite comic-movie adaptations are The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Spiderman 2, Kick Ass, and Iron Man. Watchable ones include the x-men franchise, Hulk, and Spiderman 1 One I hated were Spiderman 3, Fantastic Four 1, Fantastic Four 2, Wolverine, Daredevil. I have always hated the idea of Superman, so I have never bothered with the movies.
You are correct. I had not read the Watchmen books. The movie came across as an epic-in-2-hours, so I am not surprised that stuff got left out. The Watchmen as a stand alone movie from my perspective stood up very well. The story line had depth and explored areas where very few Hollywood movies choose to go. The Watchmen showed the potential for this genre.
I read comic books '70-'75 or so. Unlike The Watchmen, I knew the story arcs quite well. Those two Superman movies made Luther cartoonish (which is a crying shame since Gene Hackman could have completely landed a seriously bad-ass Luther) revealed Clark's secret identity to Lois Fortress of Solitude? FTW had the feeling that Brando was forced into the plot (compare Brando performance versus the Hackman's light hearted one) WRT the Spiderman movies, Tobey Maguire ruined them. Peter Parker was a bit a whimp, but Tobey was too whimpy. I could never imagine Tobey throwing a punch at anyone, ever. Finally, the Nolan's Batmans were very good films. But the Ra's Al Ghul story arc got completely raped. The original Ra's Al Ghul story arc would have made a great movie and, like the Watchmen, would have been able to touch upon the potential of this genre. Having read quite a few comic books back in the day, in retrospect, I am quite impressed with the creativity of the writing that went into those books. Very little of this this creativity has ever translated into a Hollywood movie. There is a goldmine of stories in the comic books while sadly Hollywood is more interested in the next star vehicle for Zac Efron.
Great call. And with the way 13-episode cable series are crushing network shows, there needs to be a renaissance of the mini-series and that would be the perfect vehicle.
Oh, except that I had no problem with Superman revealing his ID to Lois. That's exactly the sort of thing that would have happened in the comics before it was reversed by some magical plot twist (as it was in the movie). Tobey Macguire was good in a lot of ways too, I thought. But you're right that he was the wrong kind of wimp. Peter Parker's a nerd, but he's not emo.
Reading the original graphic novel is now on my to-do list. I just gotta figure do the whole ebook thing. Another comic book that I never read and was turned into movies that I like is Blade. Reading the Blade wikipedia entry, I see that these movies took great liberties with the source material, as well. Hollywood I suspect can't help itself.
Getting back to topic, I am psyched about the possibilities of a Green Lantern movie. Hollywood might drop the ball and actually do a reasonable job
This FAN-MADE trailer deserves to be in every page of this thread so the movie can live up to the expectations of this fan.
Yeah, that's pretty impressive. Can't imagine the time that would have taken. Anxious to see the (inevitable) leak of trailer footage from SDCC.
I don't get the Spider love. Tobey Maguire makes portions of that film unwatchable for me. Jack Nicholson in the original Batman is a better joker than Heath Ledger(and the lip licking), imo...

My initial thought on the Green Lantern Movie was that it came at a time when the genre hadn't really left earth yet on film ( at least not successfully ). Which in my opinion needed some establishing. Thor and Lantern were breaking that ground for the general movie goer, and the Fantastic 4 to a degree, but all failed. Marvel has since done that. So there is more room now for Green Lantern to succeed. But they need to back that up with a good movie.
