This is also what happens when the people making the movie have a love and passion for the IP.

I loved Godzilla with Cranston. Outside of the super cheesy "Let them fight." line, it was great. Introduced new monsters instead of only retreads. Back to nuclear as both an inciting cause and powering the villains. Menacing kaiju that don't give a **** what the humans are doing because they are irrelevant. That amazing shot of the paratroopers with the red smoke trails. Awesome.

I loved Gareth Edwards Godzilla. It had a lot of great Kaiju action and was beautifully shot. My only complaint is they largely wasted talented actors. Juliette Binoche and Cranston were gone too early, Elizabeth Olsen barely used and Ken Watanabe reduced to blank stares. The weakest actor, in fact, was given the lead. Didn't hurt my enjoyment of it though.
