It actually has very little to do with modern politics...Empires and Religions? Sure.

Paul Atreides is basically TE Lawrence (very woke!) combined with others.

You could always look and see what Herbert and Villeneuve said/have said.

OOOORRRRR: here's a thought: you could just enjoy the movie

Watched the movie today at AMC Dolby theater. Really enjoyed the film, tons and tons of action. It was incredibly fast paced compared to the first movie.

Jesus christ you guys and your misuse of the word woke. The analogy provided is spot on, the story is heavily inspired by this history of Islam and European Orientalism. The book was written in the 1965.

Liet-Kynes was an old white man in the books, replaced with a black woman.
And Chani is the daughter to Liet-Kynes... someone has some splaining to do.

I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read the books. Some of the changes I don't mind, some of the changes I wasn't a fan of.

    IMO the worst change is
the attempt to force some conflict between Paul and Chani...it's the type of conflict that can only occur if they never speak outside of the times you see them on screen and things Paul says in the books are omitted.

Of course, I get why they did certain things and I think overall it's still a very enjoyable movie.....and we don't get many of those anymore.

Worst change is changing Jihad to Crusade. Wokesters, amiright.
In the books, the parallels to the beduins is right there but in the movie they took a softer tone.

To me that change doesn't really matter, I see those words as interchangeable....with "crusade" perhaps having a bit more legitimacy with western audiences than "jihad"...but not much.

I think the parallels are still EXTREMELY clear.

I think the movie series is going for more "gray area", if you use "jihad", western audiences will automatically see them as the villains....if you say "crusade" it's a bit more ambiguous but still leans towards morally dubious.

I don't actually care. The movie is entertaining and so was the source book.

So just so I get this straight.

    1. Frank Herbert, like 70 years ago, did a lot of thorough study of human cultures living in deserts before writing Dune. Perhaps one big reason it is such a great book.

    2. Now a movie version sticks to the source material more closely than most other adaptations, but softens some of the obvious parallels, b/c politics are so hot right now.

    3. Some people want to call the movie woke. Therefore they are calling the source material woke.

    4. Our new definition of woke makes sense, I guess: based on a lot of thorough study of human cultures. :D

Okay, I can see why some of y'all get so angry about woke stuff. Carry on.

I really don't consider the movie to be 'woke'. However it has been toned down quite a bit.

It would have been nice if the movie didn't butcher key plot points as it can cause problems in future works.

The word jihad and crusade are both used in the book so it's clear Franklin had a purpose for both words.

I hope in part 3, they don't change it into something different

Some Dune prophecy from the earliest prophet, Prophet Frank Herbert ...

The Kwisatz Haderach (Neo/Paul Atreides/Leto II Ateides/Duncan) can be explained here, in conjunction with the father of AI (Sam Altman) feuding with the great space pioneer (Musk). I suspect Holtzman is a pseudonym for our very own @B-Bob

nonsense aside, The Foundation Series inspired Dune Saga. These two works inspired many other sagas, such as Star Wars, LOTR, ASOIF, Matrix and Terminator. Interesting, we can see how all these subplots are in everyday life, from geopolitics in Europe/Middle East to humanitarian concerns such as AI and religion.
