Cool. Friend of mine saw it and called; said the battles were perfect/amazing, the acting somewhat less so, and it felt a bit cramped, like they were ( as expected) trying to get too much into the alloted time. He said it was a must see as well, though, if only for the spectacle.
Thanks, Gene. Glad to hear positive feedback. I'm sure I'll love it... I eat this stuff up. Any idea if a 12 year old boy (couple of weeks shy of 13) would be OK to see it? I'd love to take my son to it, if it's not too "R".
Wow, I was wrong and right. Brad Pitt carried that movie and it was good. Orlando Bloom is crap and hopefully his career is over pretty soon. I swear though they copied a scene from LotR at the end, Legolas shooting arrows and everything.
Great movie. Beautiful cinematography, and I was impressed with Pitt's performance. Eric Bana, the Aussie, did a great job as well. Go see this movie.
i thought it was good but not epic, very cheesy, predictable and lacked some creativity, not quite near the depth of gladiator. that said, Bana and Pitt played a good job, while i think bloom was pretty bad. I also was thinking about the comparisons to the war we're fighting now, as there are a lot of parallels, "Enemies can still respect each other" spoke on par with the recent prison tortures, and the constant references to a leader doing things for his own pride and not listening to the will of his people. shocking, were the similarities going on now, and a lot of other people i knew agree.
Hayjon, that's the way it happens in the Iliad, although the movie changes some of the circumstances. It was OK, some of the editing with the long reaction shots seemed odd. Helen was not that beautiful. I think Heather Graham or Naomi Watts would have been better blondes and have more womanly figures ( even if they are over 35! ). The one on one combat stuff was cool. This entire movie may be shown uncut on network TV - there was some gore, but not much worse than some stuff I've seen on TV, they worked so hard to not show female nipples or pubic hair... re:bloom - I think he had a hard part to play, that of a lover, not a fighter, who has to be spoilers... (unless you read the Iliad or the Aenead and watched the movie). saved by his brother, and only kills from a distance. I was surprised that in a 2:45 film they didn't try to indicate the siege of Troy took any time - from the film one would think it took three days, not many years. It's also different in that some people die under slightly diff circumstances and most of the sympathetic central characters die by the end. IIRC the Iliad starts in the middle and ends before the end, but since this is a movie, they have to start a bit beforehand and have something of a finish.
Good Movie. Definetly worth the $6. It is 2hrs 45min though,(although it went by a lot faster). Go see it and yeah it would be fine to take your kids to...as long as you do not mind them seeing a couple of butts....
great movie! went to the 9:00 showing at marqee edwards bit long as someone else said, 2 hours 45 mins, but damn good movie and worth the $8 paid to see it. wonder what the final figures will be for the weekend, it was packed when we got there for troy.
ahh yes..... and perhaps bloom's worst acting job ever.... bana and pitt fit their roles quite well I thought.
*** SPOILERS *** (yeah you know what happens anyway but I always wanted to do that) Not a bad flick at all. Eric Bana blew me away, I loved his performance as Hector. Everything about his character was great which is why It really sucked when he died. Pitt was amazing as well, great role. The Battle scenes were nicely done. Helen also was pretty damn hot. I also really liked the guy who played Odysseus. Bloom was an idiot and I was rooting for him to die the whole damn movie (my little sister is obsessed with that p***y) Deckard - I wouldn't take anyone to see it who can't handle a lot of killing. There aren't any really gory scenes, but there more than a few bedroom scenes but not too raunchy IMO. Hey Macbeth - I was wondering about something, Didn't the war wage on for about 7 years or so before they finally gave up and left the Horse? Seemed like it was longer than 12 days.
Check the listings for the History Channel. They were playing shows on the Trojan War and doing the whole historical rundown. I've seen a couple of them and they're good , just like everything else on that channel. This week I saw Hugh Jackman play an animal and Orlando Bloom shoot arrows.... those guys are really going for typecast.
*****SPOILERS***** Saw Troy on Thursday night. Pretty good film considering they kind of tore up the story a bit. But a great adaptation, nevertheless. Brad Pitt...meh. Didn't really do it for me as an actor. He had one expression the whole film. Eric Bana....great performance. Considering he really isn't an 'actor'. Orlando Bloom...bah. Did what he does best (and worst), whine a bit and chase girls. Peter O'Toole...never does a thing wrong, and really made the film. Sean Bean...the only film in which he doesn't die. Stellar acting. Brian Cox...pretty good. But kind of bad in some parts. The one thing that I thought was really great was the ability to have no 'good' or 'evil' in Troy. The writer/director really did a fantastic job keeping to the original themes. BTW, does Wolfgang Peterson really have to show every male star bare-chested every three freaking scenes! Halfway through the film I turned to my friend and said: "Hercules! The cyclops tore off my clothes!" "Hehehe. Good!" A fine film, well worth seeing.
"I could've conquered Europe, all of it! But I had women in my life!" -Peter O'Toole as Henry II in The Lion In Winter Lesson of the movie.
The siege itself, according to Homer, took 10 years. I am assuming that the film emphasizes the cause for the siege, and then events that take place in the final period of the 10th year.
Thanks a lot for the feedback, Moe. I think I'll take him. (I may see it first, but only because I can't wait)
**SPOILERS** It was a handsome film, I'll give it that. The fighting and set pieces were awesome. The individual combat scenes were well done (Achilles and Hector; Achilles at the beginning, taking out some WWF-reject as if he were nothing). Some of the twistings of plot were odd. Achilles is gonna throw it all away for love; he winds up killing his love interest's cousin; she obviously forgives him; he joins the Greeks in sacking Troy, despite his love for Briseis and his respect for Priam and hatred for Agamemnon (guess he really wanted to be immortalized after all), etc etc. Pitt didn't embarass himself, at least. Eric Bana was cool. Remembering the Iliad, you knew that the film kept setting him up as a nice guy so that you'd really hate his demise. Peter O'Toole? Good to see him again in a worthy role, even if, as one critic mentioned, he looked like Dear Old Aunt Penelope. Don't know if I'll see it again at the theater, but after Van Helsing, this was a definite step UP.
Saw it Saturday. It was okay....I think Hollywood would have a hard time pleasing mythology buffs, so take the movie for what it is. Pitt's performance was okay.....but his mannerisms came through and they don't translate well to a role that isn't comtemporary. He did a better job hiding them in say....Interview with a Vampire. Still, he looks damn good for a forty year old and he'll definitely put some chick's asses in the seats. Bloom had a tough role to play. Nobody likes a coward, so it took some guts for him to even accept the role. I doubt this will have any adverse effect on his career. Eric Bana......The guy is good. I watched the whole damn movie saying to myself, "who the hell is that guy?" I know him from somewhere, but I can't remember from where. I went home and got on imdb to find out where I knew him: He was "Hoot" from Black Hawk Down, and easily my favorite character in that movie. I remember he made quite an impression then as well. This guy needs to get more and better work. All in all, the movie was somewhat entertaining. Greek Mythology would have a hard time being translated onto the big screen as anything that wouldn't look somewhat silly, so I can't complain there. Still, I hear people compairing it to Gladiator, and I definitely prefer that film over this one.
I concurr with the two points here. Bloom was annoying and cowardly, but that what Paris IS... a ridiculous character in the text too, so really he did an accurate job. "I will hunt deer and rabbits to feed us." haha. the audience at my showing laughed at some of his lines that weren't supposed to be funny. Eric Bana... was also "The Hulk." And you probably recognize him as the starting SF of the Sacramento Kings.
I saw the movie and it was what I expected it to be from Wolfgang Peterson who has made such epic's as AirForceOne. "Get off My Plane!!!" It had some good fight scenes, but there was little character development and the plotline was weak. It is a good movie in itself but pales in comparison to Ridley Scott's Gladiator as a historical epic. Ridley Scott, whose resume includes Black Hawk Down and spans back to Alien is one of the greatest directors ever. Decent movie...fun action scenes etc.
