Just saw it last night. I thought it was good, it was a fun movie. Not a classic, but it had its moments for sure. I don't understand how anyone could be ripping the creature. First of all, the monster is shown maybe 10 times total, and I STILL don't have a great idea of what it looks like. Did it have hind legs? Eyes? I couldn't really say. Maybe it's because I don't play a lot of video games, but it certainly didn't remind me of anything else. I thought it was a good design where they could have just used a generic dinosaur or spider. As for the "CAMERA BATTERY LASTS INFINITY LOLZ DUMB!!" comments, obviously the camera was only on for 90 minutes total. But besides, who's to say Rob didn't scam an extra battery or two during his freak-out in the electronics store? I mean, he apparently grabbed a phone battery, why not a battery for his camera? I enjoyed the camcorder style, and it didn't make me sick even though I get carsick at the drop of a hat. I'm not exactly clamoring for an entire new genre of shaky-cam films, but it's a nice change of pace if it's done well. Cloverfield was done well, IMO. I'd definitely like a sequel that explains more about the monster and what ends up happening.
OK so were there 2 monsters? When everyone was trying to cross the brooklyn bridge it seemed that giant tentacles smashed the bridge in half yet the actual monster that was rampaging through the city very clearly had arms and not tentacles.
Lol. I thought that there had to be more than one. But based on JJ's coments, the fact that it has a tail, and the fact that Manhattan is actually half the size of Galveston Island, it could just travel between lots of places very quickly based on it's size.
I guess I'll chime in. I caught the matinée yesterday for $4.00 at the Tinseltown on 290. I loved the movie. The camera angles werent as bad as I thought. I really hope they make a sequel. The movie did its job if it left you wanting more.
For a sequel... Spoiler Just thought of this...they could keep the hand held feel of the film, but follow the military..pass it off as the media following different units during the mess (think Iraq War)...you would get better footage, since they're professionals using professional equipment, but you would still have the shaky feel to it, especially when the s*** starts to hit the fan. Plus this would allow you to see the attack from different angles. Cut two different ground and aerial units then to central command. And you could pass it off as more military documentation of the event confiscated from various media outlets. And then at the very end, you could show what happens not only to the monster, but to Rob and Beth as well, as you cut to an infantry unit that stumbles upon them and the camcorder. Just a thought
I liked the movie...more so because of all the stuff I found out after I watched the film...like all the viral advertisements (ie the chick with the bear, pictures, etc) I have no idea how to do the spoilers thing...but here goes some... The Slusho company plays a HUGE role in the movie...the drink first emerged on an episode of Heroes when Elle (Kristen Bell's character) sits in the car after being shot and is drinking it... If you go watch Cloverfield again, watch what the girl Hud likes is drinking at the party...it's Slusho and Rob's brother Jason is wearing a Slusho t-shirt...a friend told me that that's what kills her, not the bites...remember in the subway when they find the guy with his stomach exploded? well that's what happens to her and a little one of those suckers comes out of their stomach... For people that don't know how they landed on the title Cloverfield, it's a street outside the building where they wrote the movie...they named it that to throw people off...
That pic actually came out a before the movie first debuted overseas. Most think that the pic is that of a couple of whales that the monsters fed on before making its way to New York.
Ugh, i don't know if was because i was sick with a cold, but i got motion sickness while watching this movie (Never had motion sickness during a movie before, inc. blair witch and bourne). Maybe it's bc of this that i didn't like the movie, but the lame love story, illogical actions by the characters, or the overall likeability of the characters (save for the Indian girl) didn't help.
I was asking the same thing when it came out (the horns or bones or spikes or whatever those are as well) but as someone pointed out to me the pic was released a day or two before the movie came out overseas and and I don't think they would have been showing pics of the dead monster (if it was killed) at that point in time.
If you want to know as much of the "back story" as possible, including all pertinent links to the "viral marketing" campaign, click on the following links. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/faq http://cloverfield.despoiler.org/index.php?title=Main_Page www.cloverfieldclues.com Yes, there are spoilers in those links. However, there are usually "warnings" when they are present. I followed this thing since July and I feel the first two links above are the best place to start if you're just getting into it. If you care to search, inside you will find links to every thing from real-world events like "The Bloop" and "Slow Down" to fake-world corporations like Tagruato, Slusho and Tidowave. Enjoy.
I liked it. I thought the movie was fun and i loved that they filmed so much of it in the southern Central Park area where I live. Tonight, before seeing the movie with some friends, we ate at Porterhouse Steakhouse in the north tower of the Time Warner Center \....that was the tower where Beth's dad lived. We got a huge kick out of that. Also I went shopping at Bloomingdales this weekend and took the door from the 59th and Lex subway stop (the door where they entered the military camp)
