I'm sure if it makes enough money it'll be considered. But wouldn't it be dumb to do the whole camera point of view gimmick again?
That's how I think they would do it. They would make a more traditional movie about the monster and attack.

I don't see it at all. When I look at these pics of the Chimera: I see that they ripped off the Xenomorphs from Alien and Aliens for the body and their design for the head from different aspects of monsters in Doom III. Cloverfield has some weird backwards jointed arms and another set of tiny t-rex arms and the feet are hoof like. It's pretty original in IMHO. Plus, JJ didn't design it, they went to some creature design guy that he was fond of. The little parasites looked like cockroaches with the head of those soldier bugs from starship troopers.
Saw the movie this weekend, thought it wsa solid, nothing mind blowing but just a fresh take on some very well worn ideas and concepts, I actually enjoyed that nothing gets explained as it fits with POV concept.
Well, they made a sequel to Blair Witch that was shot like a traditional movie. At least I think it was. I haven't actually seen it.
That movie gave me a headache. I hated the camera style. The movie would've been so much better had it not been for that damn shaking camera. Also, the monster could not have come out of water. The pressure difference would destroy the monster. In addition, if it were Earth based the monster would've been annihilated by the explosions. If it came from outerspace, then it would have to be destroyed using radiation or organic chemistry. That's what a degree in biochemistry has taught me.
Maybe I'm an idiot - but I've rewatched the final coney island scene on youtube and i still can't see the "splash" that everyone speaks of??!?!?!?
so you trying to apply logic and real world concepts to a monster movie, do you see a disconnect here?
Ok, -finally- saw it tonight. I loved it and thought it was a fun movie. Initial thoughts: Spoiler I really can't classify this. Like someone else said, it's more like a disaster movie with a monster thrown in. I though it was the perfect length...but I really had to pee towards the end, so that may have clouded my judgement. I was totally sucked in. It stressed me out. I kept trying to see around the camera frame for better angles of the monster or just what was going on. When I was driving home, I kept thinking about the movie and just glancing at the skyline. It was really well done. Except for Hud, no one was really likeable. I think that was the point, though. These are average people. The guys even talk about how Beth is from another planet and that Rob isn't in her league. So you have these average people running around trying to avoid the the monster. As for their motives for running back into the city: Rob lost his brother, he's in shock. Top that off with the fact that they had been drinking for a while. I know how sobering danger can be when you're drunk, but looking back you still do things you wouldn't when you're sober. As for people going with him: no way the two girls go. I can see Hud following him though. He's a good, loyal friend who isn't too bright. And I can say for sure that if my wife had called me with that message, I would have went Die Hard to get her. I thought the monster was well done. He certainly looked -very- alien. It was all very confusing and I don't know how he got from being carpet bombed in the middle of the city to getting to the helicopter crash site within the span of a few minutes. In fact, I thought at first that there was more than one monster. New York always seemed so huge, so my wife looked up the size of Manhattan Island, and it's really about half the size of Galveston. It just has tons of streets and lights and everything that slows traffic down. Giant monster doesn't have to obey traffic laws or street directions. He can just follow the copter down. I'm not sure why he only mauled Hud and not the other two. -shrug- I have a hunch about why people exploded from the parasite's bites. Some species of spiders dissolve their prey's bodies from the inside out by injecting them with venom. I think this happens with the bites. The exploding torsos result from a chemical reaction/gases. I can't explain why they were trying to drag Hud off. Like he joked, maybe they were going to make him their queen. I had mixed feelings about how well they traveled wounded...but then again, I'm not in that situation and if it was my family on the line, I wouldn't have stopped running, even if I had a metal spike through my shoulder for hours. And I did think that lily was going to fall off the building. If conventional weapons didn't hurt the thing, I'm sure that they will try biological. The creature's roar wasn't all that weird. One of the AICN reviews mentions this. Stupid movie moments: -Hud sees a video of the parasites dropping off the monster eating people. And he doesn't even think about it or tell anyone. And then they decide to stay in the subway tunnel. Bad gut decision. I would be more scared of these things than of a giant monster that has bigger fish to fry in the military. -When they are leaving the subway maintainance room, Rob doesn't take the crowbar with him. This is a classic blunder that you see in horror movies. Anyone who just fought off a dog-sized insect that was trying to eat them would take a weapon. -Giant monster hovering over Hud and he films it. Maybe at this point pointing the camera has become automatic for him. And I can understand being rooted in fear...maybe it's not a stupid movie moment, but I would have run for my life. I'm interested in seeing more of this, like everyone else. My wife read that the director is interested in doing a sequel. I'm sure that the studio execs will have a meeting about it tomorrow morning. I don't care if it's another cam movie or a typical movie style as long as they give me more info ala Aliens.
Saw it tonight and thought it was really good. Very entertaining and creative, I was kinda worried the camera movement would give me a headache but I got over it.
The makers have already made a statement regarding how - in this age of cell phone cameras, small camcorders and youtube - there's no reason that this group would be the only ones filming that night. So that's how they would set up a sequel. Personally, if they do it I think it's the only way - making a sequel with the 'traditional' style might seem kind of weird as a follow up. But they can still address some questions in a sequel - maybe someone more 'front line' the next time around. We've seen the 'regular guys who don't know what's going on' reaction, something a little more involved would be better for a new movie. I was thinking something like a Cops type shoot; you get a camera crew with law enforcement/emergency response personnel - people who would be more involved. Filming just a regular 'show' - then all the sudden all hell breaks loose. But we'd get to see more of the action. Also, as an added bonus, because it would be a 'professional' camera crew, we might would get better 'footage'. It'll be interesting if they do a sequel to see what direction they go.
Overall, I liked this movie. It was very tense and I think the style was a big reason for that. I hope it continues to do well. Spoiler I didn't even pick up on what Xerobull noticed that Hud never mentions to any of his group about the parasite creatures. Perhaps he assumed they saw the same video he did when Rob was going crazy in the electronics store. About the only thing that really bothered me was the monster jumping up out of the smoke and hitting the chopper. As someone else mentioned, up to that point, the creature had been firmly rooted on the ground and had shown no real jumping skills to speak of. That it would suddenly leap an enormous distance into the sky for no reason I can discern was a bit much.
As for sequels that aren't cam-based: I liked the first blair witch and saw the second one, which sucked. But it sucked because it was a bad movie, not because it wasn't cam-based. I think that a good classic movie would do well as a sequel, because you generally see different point of views which give you more information. Stupid Movie Moment I forgot to mention: Spoiler Why, oh why, did the helicopter pilot do a pass over the monster? Was it a effing tour? If I were in that chopper, I would have been screaming at the pilot to climb up and AWAY from the monster.
Spoiler That's okay, those pilots got theirs in the end. Also, can anyone explain what caused that gigantic fiery explosion at the beginning when they are all standing on the roof? It seemed to be a skyscraper that exploded, but I can't figure out what would have caused that. When I saw the previews, I assumed the creature would have some sort of fire breathing capability. But you never actually see anything like that. Also, based on what we see of the monster and it's abilities/size, I really can't see something like that completely dismantling and pulling under a big oil rig as they showed in the viral campaign...and certainly there seemed to be no mechanism on the monster to spew the pieces all the way out of the water and hundreds of feet up in the air. But I don't worry about that too much since it wasn't part of the main film and was really just created to drum up interest. Did anyone else think the size of the monster fluctuated a little? Most of the time the thing is huge, half the size of some buildings. But then at the end when you get the money shot just before it kills Hud, it doesn't look anywhere near that big. Maybe it was just the angle.
wasn't until after i watched the movie, did i start reading these discussions and reviews.... and frankly, i regret it Spoiler i regret not seeing the thing fall into the ocean at the end.... i regret not staying after the credits to hear the audio.... i kind of regret paying for a love story, instead of a monster movie....
