I got sick when I saw the blair witch garbage. Using that as a baseline, will this movie make me puke?
I don't think it's as bad as Blair Witch because that one actually used handhelds and this one just kind of simulates them so they have a greater degree of control over how shaky it is. All I can say is that I never felt like I was going to be sick but others have. Take it for what it's worth.
Spoiler He meant, one of them grabbed him and tried to drag him away, and she saved him, which is how she ended up getting bit.
I heard a lot of people laughing at the appropriate times during the movie when I went to see it. My entire group was laughing at a lot of the quotes in the movie too. And I'd say if you are in the 18-25ish age range, you probably have friends that are just like some of the characters in the movie (or have seen some of the same situations play out in real life, i.e. the party).
This movie was not realistic, so why shoot it in a realistic format in hand held shot??? Cinema doesn't need reformatting... Look at Daniel Day Lewis in "There Will Be Blood".... His acting skills lifted that movie into iconic showcase...
i think it adds to the effect a little more. otherwise it becomes godzilla v2. just by adding the different perspective and all the mystery leading up to the movie made it more intriguing. i enjoyed it as i said above, sucks hearing about people getting motion sickness because of it.
Did anyone keep thinking to themselves how the monster looks basically like a giant Chimera in Resistance for PS3 and the little spiders are the same little spider things in Resistance for PS3?
Who said the camcorder was running the entire time The "footage" filled an entire tape which would give you 60-90 min max (which just happens to be the length of the movie). So obviously the camera was not on the whole time they were running around Manhattan.
Cloverfield is not even in the same genre as There Will Be Blood. I think a Godzilla or Dragon Wars comparison would be more apt, but then those movies sucked so... You take take away the 1st person perspective of the film and then you get Godzilla...and even if you stick with the perspective of the characters but get rid of the handheld, you still have just another run of the mill monster movie in a tired genre. Nothing wrong with trying something fresh every now and then.
Yeah i see your point.... I enjoyed the movie very much.... I just wish they can make a movie without having to execute with a new style is all I'm saying... You can make this movie the way it is and just take out the shaky cam style... Keep everything in it with the same cgi effects and give the characters better written dialogue to speak in and you got yourself a better film... Their motives and actions were pretty stupid thus making them stupid characters...
I'd probably most likely rush back and do whatever I can if my loved one is trapped somewhere and needed help. And honestly, I don't know what I would do if my best friend was getting into danger going back for someone...I may have done what Hud did and follow him.
See I disagree. In my opinion, the handheld cam and the unique perspective make it a better film. I kind of feel like giving them better dialog would make the film feel too artificial. We don't need an oscar worthy script here, just characters trying to invoke real emotions. I think they do a pretty good job of that. A lot of the things that Hud says I can see any other "close but sometimes annoying friend" saying. When people die it's not some long, drawn out, climactic sequence played over a sweeping orchestral score; it's quick, sudden and brutal...much like real life. And I don't really understand what was wrong with their motives and decisions. I can't say for sure what I'd do in a situation like that...but I imagine if the woman I loved was trapped somewhere, and still alive possibly, I would try and find her. Now as for his friends coming along for the ride...I don't think they went with him so much to rescue Beth than to just be with people they knew. They're faced with two choices... Spoiler go with the military and hopefully get to safety or go with Rob to rescue Beth (and stay in definite danger) and then try and find a way off the island. Both paths provide a good deal of uncertainty, but only one allows you to be with the people you are closest to, which I think gives one a (perhaps false) sense of security. Now it's like we haven't seen this time and time again in films, but here it makes a little more sense. (it's not like your following your friend into the creepy house to track down a noise you heard coming from the inside...in Cloverfield you are already in a situation where danger and death is all around you. Spoiler Taking the bridge and the subway tunnel all seemed logical choices at the time even though we as an audience knew what was coming
I love how Rocket G goes on and on about how he shouldn't have to look into any of the back story to get the storyline of the movie (although you really don't) because he doesn't (and shouldn't) have time to do anything other than go to the theater...then accuses everyone of being 'complacent'
