Wow I didn't know there were people out there who thought Memento sucked, I've never even met anyone who didn't love that movie. Insomnia is a good flick, but not up to usual Nolan standards IMO. That is probably because all his other movies are just that good.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Basketball Diaries. He's gotten more one-type lately, but I think he can clearly act, plus his one-type he does very convincingly.
He batting 1000 in public perception. Most people (including me) loved Memento. Rasselas was refrerring the the fact that Nolan hasn't really had a critically panned movie yet. Maybe it's just me, but I figured it was pretty obvious he wasn't referring to Nolan's track record on the "couple of d's" movie scale...

Judging by the teaser trailer, it looks like a cross between the Matrix/Minority Report set in a Dark Knight like atmosphere/city..

I'd have to go with "The Prestige" as my favorite Nolan film with "The Dark Knight " a close second. I absolutely love offbeat films, but thought Memento was forced.
Inception This is looking really good. Love the idea and direction. Totally my type of movie. I'm starting to really like Christopher Nolan. Love his style of directing but action directing is just terrible. Love his Prestige and his Batman series. I will now have to check out Momento.
Bigger than Batman, Christopher Nolan "Inception is the biggest challenge I've taken on" Strap on your belts for July http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/her...n-is-the-biggest-challenge-ive-taken-on-.html

Despite its large budget and prime summer release date, it appears Inception will continue Christopher Nolan’s use of distinctive plot structures, according to an Empire interview with Leonardo DiCaprio. “It is complicated, it’s a complicated story-structure. It sprung from the great filmmaker Chris Nolan’s mind and he’s been able to take highly complex jigsaw puzzles in a narrative and put them together in an entertaining way that we could have never foreseen. Like you look at Memento, I don’t know how a filmmaker is able to pull a narrative like that off and have you be fully engaged. And this is another one, done on a much grander scale with more spectacle to it.” The precise structure remains a little foggy. DiCaprio goes on to explain something that seems similar to The Prestige, yet at the same time sounds like nothing we’ve ever experienced in a film before. “It is a plot-structure that’s working on multiple layers simultaneously – and quite literally when I say simultaneously, I do mean multiple narratives simultaneously. So everyone’s going to be in for a treat when they see it, including myself. I want to see how he puts it all together.” Nolan recently described the film as dealing with “levels of reality, and perceptions of reality.” And in an earlier interview with the Los Angeles Times, Nolan mentioned that the globetrotting aspects would not just be in a geographic sense, but also “in time and dimensions of reality as well.” It will be very interesting to see how this plays into what appears to be a tricky narrative structure. DiCaprio’s comments also clarify what he recently stated to be some on-set confusion amongst the cast members: “It didn’t make sense to many of us when we were doing it. We had to do a lot of detective work (laughing) to figure out what the movie was about.” Inception is certainly is shaping up to be the most complex blockbuster ever filmed. THE movie of the summer!
Me either. I loved all his branched plot movies, from Following to The Prestige (surprisingly). Every time I go to the theater (which is rare these days with the terrible films currently open), I hope to see a good preview of it.
The non-linear plot device is one of the more ambitious innovations of modern film-making. It isn't often you mind someone so talented who is committed to making awe-inspiring films.
