Saw it this weekend. Thought it was great. I actually loved the opening sceen. I was glad he didn't do something like dive off a cliff into a falling airplane only to pull it out at the last second. Finishing the guys sentence for him with out the bombs and shooting going off set the tone for a great flick. I'm looking forward to the next one. And, that was the best foot chase sceen ever.
It was a good action movie, but a Bond movie in nothing but name, essentially. Craig is not a good Bond. He's too muscle-bound (without a shirt, his head is too small for his body) and too brute compared with the Bond prototype. He doesn't have the sophistication of past Bonds. Past Bonds won on guile while this one just beats everyone up. Fortunately, I'm not a Bond purist, so I don't really care. I enjoyed the movie. Incidentally, this is the first movie I've taken my daughter, 22 months, to. Maybe taking her to a mature, violent movie like Casino Royale makes me a bad father, but she loved it. When the screen would go dark after each preview, she would be afraid that the movie was over and say, "more, more!" And late in the movie, someone is shot in the head and he falls into the foreground of the screen and then the screen goes black for a moment. And, Lydia says, "more, more!" That was a little embarassing.
depends on what you mean by Bond purist. i haven't seen the movie, but what you just described is why Bond purists preferred Connery to everyone else. my favorite Bond is From Russia With Love...i keep hearing that i'm gonna love this one.
To say "he doesn't have the sophistication" misses the point a bit. I think the filmmakers were trying to show more of the "brute Bond" than his later, more refined persona. This was supposed to show a more fallible, learning-the-ropes Bond. Then again, they were aiming, too, for a Bond that was more Jason Bourne than that ridiculous crap of invisible cars and ice palaces and whatnot, so we'll see how much Bond evolves.
I really liked this Bond, although at one point I thought I was watching the World Series of Poker on the big screen. Daniel Craig is a great Bond, imo. Something about his steel blue eyes makes it seem like he is a cold blood killer. I love it! The character Le Chiffe was a great villian also. He had a unique look about him as well. I wonder how they got those tears of blood. I think the Bond girl could have been better though
That's another thing that bothers me. Bond has been a sophisticated veteran spy for 40 years, and then they have an episode to take him back to the beginning of his career. But, it isn't set earlier in Bond's life -- it's set in 2006. Compositionally, the movie would have been better off dropping the gravy-train Bond name and tell a story about a new persona. And, I think you're absolutely right that they were trying to remake the Bond franchise in the mold of the Bourne franchise... except we've already got the Bourne movies.
the movie was awesome. a few cliche'd lines, but that's to be expected in this type of movie. overall, i loved it. best bond i've ever seen. even my girlfirend loved the movie thanks to daniel craig lol. i don't think anyone will be dissapointed by casino royale.
Saw this movie this past weekend, thought it was great and I hadn't been a fan of Bond since I was a kid. Thought it was much more Bourne than recent Bond which is a very good thing in my opinion
I saw it last night and thought it was pretty good. Definately keeps your attention going. The actions sequences are pretty engrossing and over top as Bond should be but I thought the dialogue sequences were very good and the back and forth between Bond and Vesper were good, much better than the cheesy double entendres of most Bond movies. It definately lives up to billing as being a darker grittier Bond and at a few times I thought it went oo much out of the way to make that point, like in the opening sequence. OK we get it this isn't Roger Moore in Octopussy. Regarding the action scenes did anyone get the feeling that the director had been watching Jackie Chan movies? A lot of the chases had the same kind of freewheeling poetic movement of Jackie Chan. Also this movie more than other Bond movies really plays up Daniel Craig as a sex symbol and seems to be sending the message that guys have been enjoying checking out all the hot Bond girls so here's some eye candy for the ladies (and gay guys.) Spoiler Did anyone get the impression that all of the shots of Daniel Craig getting out of the water were meant to remind people of the famous Ursula Anders shot from Dr. No? I liked the casting of Eva Green as the Bond girl. She's a better actress and has snappier dialogue than a lot of them. She is also smoking hot but I also thought she looked best when they didn't try to glam her up. Spoiler I thought she looked the best when she was starting to put on her make up before they first go down to the casino. When they show her in the casino complete done up she struck me as being trashy. The movie is long but it doesn't seem to bad. I thought it could be shorter but really am not sure what I would cut out. Overall thumbs up from me.
i saw it yesterday. ive seen every bond movie multiple times and this one is definately among the best. as long as pierce brosnan wasnt in it i knew it would be worth seeing, but the new guy plays a really good bond. i thought the fight sceens were very kung-foo style - bond was kicking some ass! the opening and first scene (in africa) has me on the edge of my seat - great way to start the movie.
i thought it was a good movie. a little bit too much poker. it felt really long, but i still wouldn't mind watching more. everything about it was nice bond reminds me of bob sura and yeah it did remind me of jackie chan action fighting a little bit confused though about the storyline.
Just saw it today. Funny a couple of days ago i was watching Die Another Day, and im really glad i didnt get any jump from a plane in a helicopter only for it to start 2 feet from the ground thing. Really good movie id recomend it anyone. I saw on IMDB that the next Bond film is suppose to come out in 2008 under Bond22 or something.
too long imo best part was the first chase scene, after that it was pretty much downhill. a card game to save the world? puhlease!
It was never about saving the world, that's what was so good about this movie. How many story lines in the past revolved around the villain trying to take over society? Too many. The card game was set up to reel in the villain and to use him as bait for the bigger fish. And it really wasn't even plot driven; it was a character-driven story. And I hate how some of the purists got all bent out of shape that he was playing Texas Hold 'Em. Hold 'Em is a lot easier to understand than Baccarat and a lot more popular these days. Why not change the game to something the public would better connect with.
best bond movie i've ever seen. i actually like brosnan and craig is a total and complete different dierction, but i loved this movie. i was unsure about the bond girl when we first see her in the train but her breasts quickly changed my mind. fantastic. also, yeah, she looked better with very little makeup.
