Not gonna get bogged down in all the political discussions surrounding this. But finally saw the movie this past weekend. I would agree with those that thought it was a bottom half Marvel effort. Which doesn't mean it was bad, but Marvel has churned out so much gold you can't always live up to that standard. I would worry a bit that if Marvel's braintrust feels like they want Captain Marvel to be the face of the Marvel universe moving forward (supplanting Iron Man/Downy Jr) then they have a lot of work to make the character more likeable. She was fine but a bit wooden (I think more the writing than the actress) and just didn't display the magnetism that other character's have in the Marvel universe. I think my biggest complaint, though, was the anti-aging effects they did on Fury and Coulson. It was incredibly distracting to me and I feel like it really damaged the chemistry between Larson and SLJ, which was key because they shared so much screen time together. Action scenes were good. Ben Mendlesohn was gold. Pacing was a little off.. for instance Spoiler the moment it was revealed the Ben Mendelsohn Scrull was not as nefarious as he seemed the movie suddenly went from being a drudge to being pretty entertaining. Felt very clunky up to that point. I'll be curious to see if the character works better with the other Avengers. So many great characters in the Marvel universe, but none of them do so well as when they are all together and working off each other.
You're right, they need to do something with Captain Marvel's character. The actress is more than capable (Room, Trainwreck, 22 Jump Street), so the writing / directing needs to get more oomph out of her. Which means more than just having her make a mean-face.
How would people feel about this movie if it wasn't part of the MCU? If this was a one off movie not connected to anything, how would you rate it?
I loved the entire fight scene in the final act. Bonus points for the Blue Man Group cameo. I'd watch the fight scene again, but not the whole movie.
Saw it yesterday. I liked it. I probably wouldn’t make an effort to watch it again but the plot twist was good, humor was good, ending battle scene was good, it was entertaining. So when does Rogue come in and steal her powers?
After more thought I’d probably downgrade it to a 6 out of 10 just by itself and I feel that’s generous. The soundtrack really detracted from the movie for me and the 90s stuff felt forced without adding anything. I put it somewhere near Venom if it didn’t have those issues I mentioned and I enjoyed Venom once it got going after the clunky start. That said Venom probably would have been a much better movie if they didn’t go the PG13 route. Honestly as a stand-alone movie it’s not worth seeing unless you’re just killing time. It needed more Ben Mendelsohn and less Brie Larson...which is kind of a problem since the movie is Captain Marvel.
Spoiler I have to say, I hated the skrulls not being nefarious. I liked that the Kree were the villains, but was more hoping Captain Marvel would turn on the Kree finding out that both races were just using Earth as a stepping stone in their war. I think the skrulls would make for excellent villains going forward.
Spoiler They could've set up Alien Invasion if they added some lines for the Supreme Intelligence. Something like "You think they're innocent? They can shapeshift to whatever DNA is lying around! Your planet could be overrun with them overnight if we didn't step in!" I think the Skrulls explode in the comics with stolen Kree tech or something, but if it's only 20-30 years under Cpt. Marvel's watch, not sure how they can turn bad.
I strongly disagree. The Avengers movies seem forced. All of the Avengers members with their own set of movies require so many minutes of screen time, whether it works with the story or not. The X-Men movies are different. Outside of Wolverine and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, the X-Men comic books were written and developed as an assemble.
You could say that about tons of Marvel movies. Black Panther, Ant man, Guardians and Captain Marvel All new Super hero's we've never seen on screen. I suspect this is just a cheap way for you to knock the franchises but alas, comic fans aren't as stupid as you think. The Universe is a Universe for a reason. It has all been planned out like this for almost 2 decades and it's working just fine.
Saw it today. It was pretty good. Not anything more than that. It was what I thought it'd be. Not necessary to see before Endgame. Had I known that I probably would have waited for it to hit Redbox
I disagree and a lot of people will probably go see this movie right after Endgame because they're missing some key info. What's a redbox?
After seeing Endgame I actually like this movie a little more than I did. Some of the nuances that bothered me when I saw it have faded, and I appreciate the character more. Also, this isn't a must-see for Endgame, but it does have a key moment that helps explain something they don't really get in to in Endgame. My wife and son saw it (second time for my son) the day before Endgame hit, and my wife loved it. She said it was made for her, which I took to mean women in their 30s and 40s. She also had a stronger sense of nostalgia for the early 90s than I do, as she was a teenager then and I was in my 20s, and although it was part of my 'formative' period it wasn't part of those halcyon days of youth that made some of the 80's great movies so magical for me.
I still haven't seen the former, but am watching the latter later. I have not seen Ant-Man 2 either. Watching Endgame in about 2 hours though . Wooooohooo
