I'm going to just buy that on Blu-Ray without having seen it first ---Javier Bardem is really one of my favorite actors right now. Got lots of man-love for him, and although some people think she looks like a horse, I think his wife is the most beautiful woman there is.........so he pulls double props from me. You should check out his page on imdb.com...........it is just ridiculous how many movies he's starred in that get really high ratings. Most of them a bit obscure.

And if that is the name of the game with some of what we are discussing here--great movies that are somewhat obscure, my vote would go for Farinelli. It's subtitled, but well worth it (much like Pan's Labyrinth)

Maybe you need to look up the definition of an Independent Films or learn how to google.

Another good indie is Cinema Paradiso. I preferred the Director's cut.

A movie can be Oscar nominated and still be considered "Independent".

Two Girls and a Guy is a pretty good one and has quite a bit of star power for an indie film, with Robert Downey, Jr. and Heather Graham.

I would just simply call an indie film a movie that didn't have a large studio to influence it during production. Sometimes it's hard to tell without looking it up because studios end up purchasing distribution rights to some of these movies (FOX Searchlight, Sony Classics, Paramount Classics, etc). Here are some recent film's that come to mind:

    Another Earth
    Hermano
    Lost in Translation
    Brick
    Paranoid Park
    Winter's Bone

Can anybody comment on Andrei Tavereski's movies? Wrong spelling, i know. He made Stalker and Ivan's Childhood. I watched the trailers and they reminded me of Kubrick and I love Kubrick.

I've watched a crapload of movies these past few weeks. Here's my reviews:

Synechdoche New York - what a mess. It was trying to be too smart for its own good. Doesn't even try to engage its viewers. 4/10
Wild Strawberries - It was an alright film, the shots were advanced for the year this film was made in. Doesn't make me want to watch it again though. 5/10
Driving Miss Daisy - compared to other best pictures, this shouldn't belong. but decent movie. 6/10
Once upon a time in the west - Definitely not as good as The Good the bad and the ugly. Hated some scenes, like when that w**** slept with the bad guy or the part in the beginning when the father slapped his stupid son for hating his mom. But overall, it's ok. 7/10
A Fistful of Dollars - for a film of its length, it felt pretty epic. The only things that ruined this movie for me was the super fake deaths. but this was sergio leone's first movie in the trilogy and he didn't have a lot of budget so I understand. 8/10
