I do think it’s somewhat anti-masculinity, but that part is funny. I also think the part where Ken takes over and ‘brainwashes’ the women is a bit of a dated reference. Women have come farther than that. However, @B-Bob’s observations on the Ken taking over scenes got me thinking outside of that box a bit. I still think the imagery is a bit misandristic.
I think the part where Ken was able to brainwash the Barbies so easily because they had had no exposure to patriarchy and therefore had not built up immunity was kind of brilliant.
I think y'all should spoiler some of that stuff, but maybe all the dudes on here are going to skip Barbie anyway, LOL.
Yeah I don't it'll be an issue. That being said, I am in your camp, this film's scripting is far more dense and textured than I expected, kind of subversive in a way.....
Who would have thought a movie about a plastic doll would be so existential. Reminds me of the Lego movie. It turned out to be a lot of fun with lots of heart. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were excellent. Will Ferrell doing what he does. Simu Lu was the perfect Ken "villain". So after that surprisingly deep movie and watching Asteroid City, I need some mindless action now!
I'm fine with spoilers, this is one I'll see when it streams and don't care if I know the whole plot. Now, Oppenheimer on the other hand, people better be quiet. You hear me history nerds? Keep that ish to yourself.
I'll say that I've seen Oppenheimer twice and those have been some of the quietest theaters I've ever been in.....
I watch a lot of movie, even the best behaved crowds during serious dramas can have a few bad apples, I just meant both audiences I watched it with were pretty engaged throughout which is rare nowadays....
Not surprising at all that this movie is the biggest box office draw of 2023. I thought Barbie died in the 90s with that stupid song. Guess not
I watched the whole thing finally; yea that movie isn't for me. The attempts are humor aren't very good and I get it's woke and women power and men are trash and stupid and all that but it's so in your face the whole time. The plot is non sensible and it's just all over the place. Good for the movie for to make a billion dollars and I like Margot and Ryan but I am good for watching it once(even though it felt like a chore)
I finally went to watch it last weekend, it was fun, I never thought they could do an actual movie about Barbie and when I first heard about it I had no illusions it would be this good........just some good mindless fun for an afternoon..........boy oh boy, Margot Robbie is the perfect Barbie
Frankly, I watched it with my mind turned off so when that turn came, it was cringe inducing. But thinking about it more, it's a pretty deep movie. Angry people were expecting Zoolander for chicks or something. Protip: if you're super angry over a movie, just rewatch the original movie you thought it would be or thought it ruined.
