So, "Alien: Resurrection" was it...it's a rag tag crew who kidnaps people in stasis and brings them to a military ship for a bounty so the military can breed/study/train aliens? In this one, it's a rag tag crew who go to an old abandoned derilect space station to scavage stuff? Hmm. I guess there are only so many ways you can encounter these beasts unless they actually do the Earth alien war thing. I assume they will be filling in the backstory of how the space station became an alien habitat?

Prometheus to me is kind of like what Sony has been trying to do for the past few years with the whole “let’s make Spider-Man movies but without Spider-Man” thing. Let’s make an alien movie but with no Alien.

That’s where it starts off, but it does TRY to zig into a different genre which I liked… but then it feels like it has to service horror moments because “it’s an Alien movie” like the Xenoworm scene. If it wanted to Zig, let it embrace that genre completely and make it more of a Blade Runner film but with the engineer thread.

I liked the movie when I saw it though. Visually stunning. A lot of lore to think about and dig into with the engineer plot. The spirituality angle I felt was too on the nose though. A better sci fi director (crazy to say that about Ridley Scott now but true) would have looked to Kubrick’s influence on the utilization of subliminal iconography and implication to better hit home of the questions it was asking… in this case it just had its two main characters just talking about it which took out the audiences ability to have to actually think about what message was being sent. Again… Kubrick is the master on this, and more Kubrick influence here would have been nice.

So yeah Prometheus is flawed as hell, and problematic. However it’s still great that it got made somehow, and imo vastly better than Covenant which I think is maybe the worst Alien movie besides the AVP movies. And yes I think Alien 3 is better and severely underrated.

Also I get the sense that Romulus was made to be sort of the Alien version of Prey which was awesome but made to just sort of be a simply fun Predator movie, and not a big budget blockbuster… but it got good reviews and got them thinking that Romulus should be put in theatres instead of direct to Hulu. If this movie is judged the way Prey was, I think we are in for a treat. If it’s judged the way Prometheus was with the expectations there then… we may be vastly disappointed in this one.

Apparently the written script and concepts were interesting as hell but fell so flat in its transition to film that a ton or details were dropped. Liked the memorable bits, but the characters were mostly unlikeable with countless lobotomies.

This guy's channel is pretty obsessive piecing together all the clues.

Had a chance to see it last night. I thought it delivers for sure.

There will be nitpicks, and there's something that they do here that Disney has been doing a ton lately that pisses people off that I won't spoil. However I thought it mostly worked.

Saw it last night, agree as well. There are some script issues and the characters pretty stupid but it works because it looks and feels like first two films. A few too many callbacks for my taste but when it gets creative it really delivers some impressive sequences that really work. Solid B for me....

Very Very minor spoilers here, but nobody should mind. I think the thing that works best here other than the presentation/look of the film is the fact that it goes back to two key elements:

-There is a time crunch element that the first two movies had that just turns up the dial on the suspense. That's really essential to a classic Alien movie that drives that anxiety that is like a drug for Alien fans. This movie realizes that, and puts a big plot device in that goes back to what Aliens did so well with the ticking clock that is real time with the movies ending.

-The classic "We need to go from point A to B, but X threat is in the way... how do we get there" is so a classic suspense trope, but really really works here. The whole movie really works because it's moving in a geographical way that you can get.

I just saw it and I believe it was very solid and a nice addition to the franchise. Very respectful of the lore and plenty of nods to the other movies. Any issues I had are really nothing more than little nit-picking things.

    8.8/10

Same here -- probably a movie I'd check out at some point, but I didn't really like the trailer and the history of franchise since Aliens has been disappointing. Reading all the positive reviews/ posts has definitely changed my mind.

I really like the possibilities here for a sequel. The fact is from a story perspective you have the lead and Andy entering Cryo about 10 years from the events of Aliens. You could easily pluck the two of them out of space, and write her into a storyline that intersects with Aliens in some really cool ways.

Don’t forget about the legendary, landmark Blade Runner spin-off, Soldier, starring the late great Kurtis Russell.

I want to give this movie my best concentrated attention, so I can't watch it on a work day.

Yeah, it was pretty good, had a few suspenseful moments, and captured the horror of the first films without overdoing it.

Honestly that Prometheus video and the lore are interesting as well. Tying them together with a few callbacks was nice also.
