There have been more than 150,000 troops who have been rotated in and out of Iraq, so your 1 in 65 figure overstates the odds of a US soldier being killed.

We need to compare the average occupation size to the number of troop deaths, and not the total number that pass through the region. Otherwise, using the California comparision, we'd have to compare it to everyone who passes through the state, not just the residents. I guessed at the 150,000 average size, so it may be low, but you can't just add every US serviceman who has set foot in Iraq. I guess the 1 in 65 is for a soldier who is in Iraq at any given time.

 

That should read "more than 60% of unscientifically polled americans..." to reflect the inaccuracy/spin.

I doubt there is a true barometer from either point of view. And that said, we all hope for an earlier vs. longer war.

If/when a war is occuring (I would say necessary, but that's also a point of view issue).

 

But if you are saying that soldiers who are there now have a 1 in 65 chance of being killed, you would be wrong.

 

That is the way that MoveOn.org and the rest of the domestic insurgents prefer to see our troops.
