I'm guessing that by the time Schobel would be effective, we'll have Cushing back and it won't matter. If the pass rush suffers after the Raiders game, Uncle Bob can eat me... raising ticket prices and not opening the pocket book...
I think they believe Ogunleye will be a difference maker once he is in shape, along with Cush's return, so I won't kill them either way but all that flirting for nothing kind of sucks.
Here's an interesting quote from Schobel... http://houston.sbnation.com/houston...rks-out-for-texans-doesnt-sign-september-2010
Just imagine what that workout looked like. The guy is nowhere near football shape, he's probably been just chillin this whole time, drinking beer, watching tv, eating everything in sight and now he has to go through a combine-esque workout? It probably was not pretty, and probably made Frank Okam look like Mario Williams in comparison. Its like Eastbound and Down's Kenny Powers coming back to throw scouts (of course not to that extreme)
Dammit, 3 pages of logic and reason undoing 3 weeks of hoping and praying for Schobel. But while it may be wishful thinking to wonder what a 100% Schobel brings, think about our alternatives: Ogunleye, Nading, Denney. Schobel may have been soft for a few weeks, and would have started as a role player, but both of those would most assuredly change as he fell into his groove. Kollar, our current D-line coach, was at Buffalo until 2009 anyways, so we already have a guy who would've known how to use Schobel's strengths, and scheme, or at least translating the scheme would've been easy for Schobel to have picked up. Even if it took until after the bye, I can't help but drool at the stonewall that could have been the Texans front magnificent 7. The Colts in their championship year didn't need their run defense to click until the post season.
He could have taught Jackson how to showboat for the fans after making a routine tackle while the opposing QB quicksnaps for a 40-yard gain.
I'm more concerned about him learning how to cover somebody. Dunta would have been no help in that regard.
dunta...as much as i came to dislike him...would easily...far and away...be the best corner on this team right now. like it or not, we could use him.
the more i read this the more i think there is zero excuse for not signing this guy. with as little pass rush as we have right now...even if schobel isn't ready for another couple of weeks, i'd sign him and have work with training staff all day, everyday. this man has been an impact player for years now...including less than 12 months ago. no reason to believe he wouldn't be again.
in coverage? really? because I remember him giving up lots of receptions and getting burned routinely last year. dude was *great* against the run, and... well, "on the field" against the pass.
