just wondering, why are alot of people high on mathis? it's not like he's shown any great receiver skills. sure, he can return a kickoff better than anyone but that does not a good receiver make.
Quite true, but if Mathis continues to be a return threat, he doesn't need to be a WR option. However, if you put him in with Moulds, Johnson, and Bush, do you think they're going to be doubling up on him? At the very least, Mathis could be a deep threat, because of his speed or a slant receiver for his cutting ability. I'm intrigued on how they're going to utilize all this talent.
Babin got 2 of those sacks against proably the worst starting qb in the NFL last season (A. Smith). We can agree to disagree but I see both of those guys being average players for the rest of their careers. I think Kiwanuka is a guy that can have several 10+ sack seasons under his belt when its all said and done. I could be wrong but if had to pick between Peek/Babin or Kiwanuka then im going with Kiwanuka.
The offense is really starting to look good. These additions plus what is sure to be a MUCH improved scheme should make the games much more exciting this year at the very least. Assuming we get Bush I don't think they'd put him on special teams, but imagine if they did. With either Bush or Mathis getting the ball on pretty much every kickoff we would have one hell of a return game.
Question (disclaimer--I don't know a blessed thing about NFL football): do you think the scheme and poor coaching have anything to do with these players' failure to meet expections?
Sure coaching was a factor but im saying I don't see either one of those guys being a 10 sack player. Like I said I might be wrong but I think they will be role players at best. Kiwanuka will be a steal for a team in the second round.
You don't honestly think that Kiwanuka is being considered for the 2nd pick when we still have serious holes at OL and CB? I think that Peek and Babin are an acceptable duo for next season. Of course they could be better, but they haven't been playing their true position until now. Are there better prospects in the draft? Of course, but not in the 4th and later rounds. I still think we're going to draft a lineman in the 2nd and defense in the 3rd, and seeing that we haven't picked up a CB in free agency yet, I think that will be the next priority.
Mathis can out run almost anybody off the line. The guy has great straight line speed. The questions are - Can he catch? Can he read defenses? Remember Chris Sanders of the Oilers? He made a career of catching deep balls if you remember. Every team has a speedster for a situational play (ie Dante Hall (KC), Tim Carter (Giants), etc...
