    Rick Carlisle

He wins wherever he goes. I'm more happy for him than anyone else on that Dallas team.

I've been singing his praises ever since JVG was not re-hired. Wouldn't have bothered me one bit if he was hired by the Rockets instead of Adelman.

When the Mavs brought him on board, I knew it was a great choice and he would do well there.

I still think he would have won a championship with the Pacers had Artest not gotten suspended that entire year. Happy that Carlisle finally got some gold.

    Kevin McHale

Gets so much hate for no reason.

Being a condescending douche on NBA TV probably contributes to that.

I honestly had no idea the guy was such a great coach. After seeing his game-to-game and in-game adjustments during the playoffs this year, I'm very impressed. He's well-deserving of this championship. Spo got schooled in the Finals.

Guess what factored into the Mavs hiring Carlisle? :)

On Using Stats in Hiring a Coach

We did a study that showed he was the best coach in the NBA the last ten years. It's part of why Mark hired him.

How would you evaluate a coach?

We looked at every player that was traded to a coach's team. We looked at their rating the year before in our system and then how they did when that coach got them. And look at the difference. Carlisle crushed everybody. We sent that to Mark [Cuban] and a week later he hired Carlisle. (And I think he said that was part of it -- it wasn't the whole thing.)

But it wasn't close. He was at least two standard deviations better than average. He jumped out and there was nobody else close. He kicked everybody's butt on that.[/rquoter]

We did a similar study in which we used a player’s Adjusted +/- rating as the measure of player performance. We found Rick Carlisle to be the best coach. Mark Cuban stated that this analysis helped convince him to hire Rick Carlisle.[/rquoter]

Yep, there's a reason we wanted to interview his assistant Dwane Casey.

    ...

DANG, I just realized we passed up Dwane Casey, an NBA champion, for some dude who hasn't accomplished anything since the '80s.

    :(

Carlisle has always been a very good coach. He got ousted in Detroit for I don't know what (had back to back 50 win teams). His Pacer team probably would have went to deep into the playoffs if it weren't for the Malice at the Palace.

Same here. I supported Carlisle to be the rockets coach at that time as well. Adelman is a great coach too. But, I think Tmac & Yao were not appropriate players for his system. It was wired for the rockets to hire Adelman at that time.

I remembered how nice the J.oneal, artest team played. They remind me a lot of these Mavs. Team ball, defense, offense, substitutions all that good ****.
