I'd rather watch Teen Wolf than Back to the Future, to be honest. My parents gave me that movie for Christmas one year, and I would watch it all the time...
cry? I can barely hear from that loud pounding sound they play as the ball hits the rim about 15 times. I was always puzzled by the fact there there was a whopping ONE black guy in the basketball scenes. I know it was set in the midwest, but you figure that there would be at least a couple of brothers on each team...
I think you missed a big one RR: Eloquence. I don't think there is anything that garners more respect than being able to speak well.
I think some people hinted at it earlier, but I'll come out and say it. If a "talent" is an innate ability or skill you have, then being attractive would have to be the most important. Sex appeal is far and away the most respected talent. Just look at pretty much every talent on this list. Acting - Who is the most bankable actor in Hollywood? Tom Friggin' Cruise, that's who. He's a terrible actor. His acting is like a ham and cheese omellette, hammy and cheesy. Yet he continues to be one of the most popular movie stars. Why? Because the dude looks good. Just look at nearly every female actor in Hollywood. I can guaran-damn-tee you there are a lot more talented people who don't get cast because they are not as attractive. Musicians - What artists do the vast majority of people endorse, i.e. buy records for? Attractive people. Fat chicks go sing opera while hot chicks cut popular records. There's a reason Carnie Wilson didn't sell to many records after she ate a Walrus. It's been documented time and time again that when two people of near equal talent are compared, the more attractive one will win out nearly every time. If I had to pick between movie-star good looks or an ivy league degree, I'll take the good looks thank you very much. For all our high culture, we're really just fancy monkeys driven by basic needs. It's why Jessica Alba is a multimillionaire and the chick that beat her out for the lead in the high school play is struggling as a waiter in LA. "When it comes down to it, is there any more to life than food, ****, and sex?" - Bruce Campbell in "Bubba Hotep"
I think Al Gore and John Kerry would beg to differ. But, I agree with you. Being able to speak comfrotably and off the cuff in front of a large group of people is a bombass skill to have.
Business acumen. Look at who the richest people in America are. One way to measure what we most respect is the compensation that we are willing to pay. The #1 guy is Bill Gates, and he certainly doesn't have movie star good looks, great writing or acting skills, singing, dancing, athletic ability, and he dropped out of college. The greatest ability to have is the ability to figure out what people want and how to get it to them better than anyone else.
I respect people that are great artists because that is a talent I know I will NEVER be able to do myself. I love art, especially painting, yet I can't do it myself, so I have a lot of respect for people who can do it well. So I said other.
Don't tug on Superman's cape. Don't spit into the wind. Don't pull the mask of the ole Lone Ranger and don't mess around with Jim.
Language is what seperates humans from the animals. Writing seperates us from people living in the Stone Age. After all the people with other talents have reached their peak, the writer would be there to record it for generations to come. The next distant talent that could accomplish that would be folk singing/oral tradition.
I would say the most respected talent is being invisible. A close second would be the ability to fly.
Um, I think you got that backwards. Who gets more props, Superman or the Invisible Woman. I rest my case.
