Hooray for west Houston. I can go over to Krogers right now and hear at least 5 different languages or at least 5 different accents. I was watching the muti-part series Carrier on PBS off and on. It's more of a sociological study than a History Channel type show. Every kind of American works at the 5,000 or so jobs on the ship and the units are 100% ethnically integrated; but when they go to the mess hall the sailors tend to break off into ethnic groups by table.
Even that's changing with all of the condos they're building east of 35. I think a lot of minorities are moving even further east to the newer and very reasonably priced subdivisions in Manor & Webberville. I lived in a subdivision in Harris Branch where we might have actually been the minority (yes, we're white). The subdivison had something for everyone...asians, hispanics(?), blacks, etc. West of 35 is pretty damn white, though.
I've always felt Austin was segragated and use the 1-35 divide in arguments with other Austinites who enjoy thumping thier chest at how liberal and open minded Austin is. but alas... I went back last weekend for my birthday and the gentrification of east Austin is in full effect. New condos, shops, bars, etc...
My new place I'm moving to in a month is on 100th street in Wauwatosa. Southwest corner of the Timmerman airport. Right now I'm right around 17th & Wells.
Kansas City, Detroit and St. Louis all seemed bad when I visited :/ As for Chicago, I dont think its that bad, its just alot of housing projects in one area so that might explain the stats
I know this place probably isn't at the top of the list, but the most divided place I have ever spent time in was Wilmington, DE. I spent a summer there selling books door-to-door and the divide was very clear. It was so obvious that I (black male) could set up the white neighborhoods before the sun went down and go to the hood afterwards (they also didn't seem to have a black middle class).
houston's airports are absurdly white. there are definitely a lot of middle class areas that are diverse. but airport, downtown are just pale.
Uh... downtown may be pale, but have you looked at the immediate area? I believe that Second Ward, Third Ward, Fifth Ward, Almeda, and the East End beg to differ. Also, I would say that the area around Hobby is most definitely Hispanic-dominated.
