I don't entirely understand the standards Manny laid out for the overrated level. Critical praise? What exactly does that mean? Winning awards? Being mentioned in articles? Kind of hard to pin down exactly what that means. Personally I don't read music "critics" or movie critics for that matter because most of the time they are full of **** and out of touch with what I like. But trying to keep to what Manny had intended, I'll list some that I think are praised by critics, now or in the past. Michael Jackson - yeah he sold albums, everyone supposedly loved him, yadda yadda yadda. But there are only one or 2 songs in his career that I though were okay. I just didn't see the big deal. Madonna - the only song I ever liked from her was the one for Austin Powers, and I think maybe another song from her last album. The rest of her stuff blows, esp the early stuff. 50 cent - in the club was alrite even though the lyrics sucked ass. But just about any rapper with enough pub coulda made it with that song. Wanksta was mediocre, and everything else of his has sucked. Sean Paul - this guy just sucks donkey balls. Yankem. Ozzy - Dunno if he's ever gotten much praise, but this dude is such a ****ty singer that if he ever recieved any praise then he deserves to be on this list. Beastie boys - a majority of their stuff stinks, with only a few real gems. Pharrel of the Neptunes - dude is awesome at producing and even has a few good songs of his own, but please stop singing. I just can't stand that high pitched stuff. that's all I can really think of at the moment.
no you dont have to like every one of their songs...i dont. there is definately alot of filler material they put out, especially on the white album. lots of people dont like the beatles, but surely you can admit that they are not overrated. i dont really care for eminem, but i would say he is overrated. just not my thing. by the way, nice mr. show signature! "dude, show me your weenis!"
someone on the 1st page mentioned wynton as being overrated. miles talks alot about him in his autobiography. says that he had no respect for his elders or for pushing the boundaries of jazz. thought of him as a young punk know-it-all.
Crisco....have you ever listened to the N.E.R.D. album? If not, pick up a copy of "In Search Of..." and give it a chance. This is honestly one of my favorite albums of all time, and I'm not really much of a hip-hop fan. Every song on there is great in my opinion.
Overrated....yet I like these guys..... 1. 50 Cent. I agree about 50 cent. Totally overrated. I recall someone on this board putting 50 cent as "Top 3 musicians of all time" and I cringed. "In Da Club" - great. "Wankster" -stupid. "PIMP"- addictive. The rest...mediocre at best. 2. Travis....there is a reason why they didnt do well in the States. They weren't that good. But damn the mags wrote em up as the new Oasis, whatever that means. 3. String Cheese Incident. I like em, but not THAT much. Jesus, get a job, stop following around a bunch of banjo players. 4. Wilco. Uncle Tupleo NEVER EVER EVER shoulda broken up. Kudos on their last album, however. Good stuff. 5. Ryan Adams. See comments above, replace "Uncle Tupleo" with "Whiskeytown". My friend's husband is his manager at Lost Highway and I have to sit though these discussions on how Ryan Adams is going to be the next great singer/songwriter. I'd like it to happen, I like his stuff.....but I think he peaked.
I've heard parts of that album and I like, but of the songs I heard he isn't really trying to sing. I'm talking about all the guest shots he's doing in songs(like snoop and busta rhymes) and his latest solo single. The earlier stuff was good, but the new castrato stuff has got to go.
Thus the reason that the word "overrated" is over used and really annoying... "Overrated" simply means "a lot of people like it, but I don't"...Well hell, a lot of people like reality TV and I don't, but that doesn't mean it's "overrated", it just means that I think it sucks...
I haven't read Miles autobiography (hmmm...something to add to my Xmas wish list). However, in a Bass Player article, bassist Ron Carter criticized Marsalis for setting very strict and mostly arbitrary guidelines for what constituted jazz music. I think the problem is that Marsalis was a technical prodigy who never gigged enough to properly understand jazz. He was basically given a recording contract and his own label when he was barely out of his teens, and thus was given artistic freedom before he developed any real artistry. As a result, he's intellectualized what should be a more intuitive artform and you can hear it in his music. Even worse, music critics, instead of criticizing his conservatism, praised his return to "tradition." But the problem is that the history of jazz encompassses much more than 50s hard bop, and Wynton's obsession with this period has caused jazz to stagnate. It's really too bad. Back on topic, another band who I find overrated is Wilco. I found Yankee Foxtrot Hotel unlistenable. It was like listening to a bad bar band try to recreate OK Computer but forgetting to include any melody. If I had been the record label, I would have dropped them also.
50 Cent should easily be #1 in this category. Were it not for Dr Dre's beats, he would be workin' at the local "Five and Dime" Talent? None. Well, he can rhyme, I guess. But so can most 5-year olds.
Thank you! This gets on my last nerve, there are so many folks out there that say, "I don't Band X, so I'll call them overrated." Another idiotic thing to say is, "Backstreet Boys/NSync/whatever boy band is overrated" No they're not, they're perhaps over-popular, but their rating is 0 with most music critics, so therefore they can't be overrated. Most overrated, there are too many to choose from, but probably my #1 would be Nirvana. I like them a hell of a lot, but the critics probably overrated them a bit too much.
Oasis- When they said they were better than the Beatles, I couldn't stop laughing. Limp Bizkit- I don't see why these guys got famous. More bad playing and all Fred Durst does is whine constantly. Moby- As Eminem said, "Nobody listens to techno!" P Diddy- worst rapper ever J-Lo- best ass ever, but no voice Brittney- fine as hell, sell my soul for a week of consenual sex with her, but her music is the worst crap ever invented. Christina Aguilera- She tries to do far too much with her voice and she whines far too much for my tastes. Madonna- She can't sing! All she can do is stir up controversy. Cher- Ditto, add a techno beat and her unnatually deep voice and you have a formula for yeeeech! Celine Dion- "My heart will go on......" Not if you keep singing it won't! One of the worst histrionic singers ever. Rolling Stones- Dull, blues-inspired rock from four of the ugliest SOB's ever to pick up a guitar Coldplay- Heard a few songs and realized why I turned the radio off years ago. The Strokes- I saw them for the first time on SNL and I couldn't believe they had a record deal. Two chords, distortion and unintelligible lyrics do not good music make. They have to be one of the worst bands I've ever heard. Lenny Kravitz (now)- Kravitz went from musical savior to a paint-by-the-numbers hitmaker. No thanks, I'll pass. Pink Floyd- I used to listen to them and think they were one of the greatest bands ever, but now I realize what garbage their body of work was. I guess when you grow up you realize what a rotten singer Roger Watters is and how pathetic their arrangements were. Nirvana- Unintelligible singing and awful playing, this band sounded no different than any other ****ty garage band. Except this one got a huge record deal and were hailed at geniuses. Hole- Courtney Love can't sing, these folks can't play a note and just their name annoys me. Neil Young- He can't sing, can't play and whines constantly about "Keep on rocking in the free world" over a ton of distortion. Yeech. Bruce Springsteen- A classic whiner who paints himself as a "working class hero" but can't play a lick and can't sing at all. Creed- Scott Stapp, grunge is dead! These guys are one of the worst bands ever to get a record deal, up there with the Strokes and Nirvana. From a review of a Toronto concert: These bands could put out nails scratching on a chalkboard and Rolling Stone would find a way to call it genius and give it five stars REM-Their old stuff was classic, their new stuff:awful. Berry was right to get the hell out of dodge. Pearl Jam- Eddie Vedder mumbles more than my 80-year old uncle and guys, grunge is dead! No one wants to hear Eddie's constant whining over 150 decibels of distorted guitar. U2- After the Joshua Tree, it was all downhill for these guys. They could fart into a mike and RS would give them five stars. Radiohead- I don't get these guys....hold on, I do. They are liberals who whine and therefore, the liberals who run RS love them. Never mind that they can't play.
number 1 all time has to be Barbara Streisand. a close second would be Cher. Marilyn Manson is grossly overrated its kinda funny. That new Clay Aiken guy sucks a$$. and I hate to admit it but Van Halen is overrated. for all the accolades they get, people make them sound like the greatest rock band ever. i would not even put them in my top 10.
So is that why they have so many fans around the world and are well respected by the majority of other artists? Because they are liberals that can't play their instruments? I know that's what I enjoyed the most about their concert a few months ago. I mean the music really sucked, but who cares...they are liberals!
ill second that. a great album that has remained in my regualar rotation for the better part of a year now. ill agree w/ cisco though that the falsetto voice stuff is gettin old quick.
Actually, I'm a conservative who digs Radiohead pre-Kid A. Believe me, they can play. I can name about 50 of my favorite bands that I wouldn't like if their politics had anything to do with my opinion of their music. Not a big deal to me.
I missed this post earlier, but... Um, I think that was an unnecessary comment. The intention of the thread was to list who you thought was overrated, not blast other people's picks. I could have easily said the same thing you said, except replace those 3 artists with led zeppelin, black sabbath, or bob dylan. But I didn't because I didn't want to come across as a prick.
word up, rereading that it does seem harsh. however i would still argue that if you think the 3 mentioned are overrated you dont know much about music. one must not have to like them to realize their importance. and if anyone called zeppelin, sabbath or especially the bob overrated i would think they were nuts.
