No...Jordan winning championships is not different from Jack winning Oscars. A championship is the greatest accomplishment an athlete can acheive, and an oscar is the greatest accomplishment an actor can achieve. Whether or not the oscar is voted on has no bearing on its importance. If that were the case, all those Olympic medals in activities like figure skating and gymnastics that are scored by judges are meaningless.

An oscar is still an accomplishment. He's been nominated and received numerous awards for well over 40 years. Awards and box office numbers are the only two quantifiable ways to measure an actor's "skills", and Jack has the hardware and the box office receipts to back all that perception up. If opinion were the only way to compare actors, then the word "overrated" really doesn't have any meaning.

I don't know, I guess I just have a problem with the word "overrated" being thrown around and misused so often...

Tom Hanks, IMO, is over-rated. He's a good actor in great movies, not the other way around.

I'm not condoning it, but p*rn in the early 70's was kind of artsy-fartsy, not the slam-bam-thankyou-ma'am machine it is today. There were several celebs that did a little p*rn.

    I entirely agree.

Julia Roberts is overrated, and the woman can't walk in heels worth a damn.

    Bette Midler is overrated.

    Diane Keaton is overrated.

    Cher is overrated.

    Barbara Streisand is overrated.

Agree with all except on Keaton. If anything, I think Diane Keaton, now, is underrated.

Yes. Pretty amazing, isn't it? Thank god I grew up with a father who was addicted to going to the movies. We went about 3 times a week. I'm not kidding. Once or twice to a drive-in, where I suspect he made out with Mom when my sister and I were asleep, and one of the movie palaces Downtown on the weekend, with hot dogs at the original James Coney Island afterwards. I'm one lucky dude.

al pacino and deniro and to an extent jack. They were great in the 70s but now they just play themselves (exception was Heat).

I'll probably get crucified for this, but I never liked Samuel L. Jackson.

People act like he's a walking god, but I just never saw the big deal about him.

That was a bad movie, but the good part about that scene was.... Jackson started into this go-get-'em speech, and you're thinking, "Oh God. Not another 'go-get-'em' speech. I've seen that a million times in movies." And right when you think that (very early into the speech) a shark jumps up and eats him. That was kinda cool.

The rest of the movie sucked, though.

Yeah, I agree many top actors usually play the same similar roles they're known for. Now that I've thought about it, maybe we should look at it like a groundbreaking band. They made it big by breaking on the scene w/ their new and original sound. Take the Red Hot Chili Peppers for example. Now more than 10 years have past, they may have evolved, but you can still tell they have their same trademark sound.

Eh, just trying to rationalize the situation a bit. Yeah, Pacino plays the same type of guy most of the time, but he's 100x better than the person who tries to attempt the same character. And Pacino playing that character may be more convincing then any other actor portraying any other character. Actors who are the best in their niche, rather than a jack-of-all trades actor. Just a random stream of thought there...

When mention who you think is "overrated" you should also list those you don't think are overrated. Your choices would probably make more sense.

DiCaprio is overrated. That doesn't mean that he isn't good. He's good sometimes. Sometimes he's horrible. He's also limited in what he can do. He just simply will never be able to put in the depth to a character that someone like Johnny Depp can. Watch Finding Neverland with Johnny Depp. Imagine DiCaprio playing that role, and it just wouldn't work. But I can't think of a role that DiCaprio has played that Depp couldn't have done better.

That being said DiCaprio is good in some movies, but in others he is absolutely horrible. He was awful in Titanic, and Romeo and Juliet. I mean really bad.

Robin Williams is overrated to me as well. When he's serious he overacts, and when he does comedy he needs to realize that less is more. As was once said on the Daily Show - Fast and Loud doesn't automatically make it fun.

Jodie Foster - Often over acts and emotes all over the place. Sometimes she's good, but she's overrated.

Julia Roberts is passable but not great, but I don't think she usually gets that much praise for her acting so she isn't really overrated to me.

Brad Pitt is good for what he does, but isn't great. He might be slightly overrated.

I love Nick Cage because the choices he makes with his characters are very original and different from what any other actor would do. Most of the time it works in a great off-beat way. He's been in some horrible movies though.

Paul Giamati is one of the best actors out there. He can do a lot of different things, very real, and convincing.

The most underrated actor of all time is probably Peter Sellers. It sounds corny but the guy totally inhabited a character and became that character, and he made very original and creative choices with how he created the characters. He was amazing.

Another underrated actor that almost nobody has even heard of is Robert Morley. Watch his performance in the 1930's Marie Antoinette.

Perhaps the most underrated performance I've ever seen was Andy Griffiths in A Face in the Crowd. Sadly the role messed him up for the rest of his life, and did permanent damage to him, but he was absolutely amazing in that movie.

Legends of the Fall is one of my favorite movies. I think Brad Pitt is a very good actor.

Hard to think of a overrated actor, but to go along with what some other people are saying...

I'd agree with Segal and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Agreed- With Depp - these 3 are all fine actors. I thought that Sean Penn ad Mickey Rourke would be the Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro of their generation-I was wrong...

Wahlberg has been consistently good. Terence Howard was aweome in "Hustle and Flow"
