I'm not saying I like these guys better than Elvis, Hendrix, and Beatles. Those guys are gods to me, while I have to search pretty to find a shred of musicality in a Lady Gaga song. My point is that we shouldn't be surprised if, at some point in the future, people will look at Bieber the way we look at Elvis. They'll never be comparable in my eyes, to to many eyes they will.
I'll be absolutely surprised because if anything these type of artist (with the exception of Gaga) are flashes in the pan and will soon go the way of any one or two hit wonders. I see what you're saying but even with the short attention span of this new music generation I don't think The likes of Bieber and Kesha will amount to anything more than single serve throw away music.
bleh, why beiber? more then likely, if all goes right, this man will become that 2000s legend in 50 years- hell, anyone other then bieber. don't want to see my generation misrepresented like that. plenty of class, intelligence, greatness and substance in the 2000s, if you know where to look.
Good point. I was trying to use more extreme examples to get a point across. Beyonce would probably be a better example. I'd also keep an eye out for Youtube artists. A lot of people my age and younger are just as familiar with Marie Digby and Boyce Avenue as they are with Colbie Caillat and The Fray.
I really think it will be Eminem/Kanye/T.I. that people will remember the most from this decade.

There are some songs from the 60's and 70's that weren't hits but are known better now. Like In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and other psychedelic songs. Maybe some of the indie bands now can have that type of significance later on since no one is taking the pop music that serious nowadays. I define "iconic" as "signature" and "symbolic" of the whole. Deee Lite "Groove is in the Heart", Robin S "Show Me Love" and Right Said Fred "Too Sexy" arent good songs, but you can sure say they are representative and "iconic" of 90's all the way. But then people's personal experiences in can be different, so the sounds they listen to can be different from the main offerings. I think the the bands Lush and Afghan Whigs perfectly capture 90's sensibilities but those arent "go-to" bands. I saw Scar Tissue, won a 2000 Grammy, but it was released in May '99. This was after I was gonna correct someone else on their song, oops And goodness that DAMN Fort Minor song...its time to make a sports highlight mix. You know what song would be go along with it? Whats that song where it goes "Fifteen percent concentrated power of will." - Yeah Fort Minor, Remember the Name. THAT one. That will go GOOD with my highlight mix.... Anyways
