I think you've lost it. U2 doesn't have great skill? The band has managed to go through almost 3 decades now while releasing some of the most influential albums of all time. They have shifted their sound to experiment with new techniques and to keep up with modern trends. Oh, have I mentioned they still have the same lineup? That is impressive. It takes musical talent to do all that.. so keeping up with modern trends makes you skilled? Influential Albums? You can't be serious...well, you just posted a Creed song so I guess you might be. It takes Zero musical talent to change costumes and play the same riffs over and over.
Singer Chris Martin has described a track written for Coldplay's next album as "basically genius", saying it could be their best composition yet.
Coldplay has always intrigued me, they've always sounded so generic and uninspired at times, but then they sound ****ing amazing at other points. I thought their last album was decent enough, but my favorite Coldplay album will probably always be X&Y.
I think you'll have more trouble proving that U2's albums didn't have any influence than saying they did. Not saying I agree with this at all, but Spin recently called Achtung Baby the most influential album of the past 25 years, so it's not like it's some preposterous idea. Heck many people even point to U2 as Coldplay's #1 influence.
Don't be dense, it was perfectly applicable according to the criteria of the thread. I couldn't care less about Creed. Everyone knows that song and it's definitely "iconic"
I don't know what your definition of "talent" is, but please do explain. I think in most cases when your albums (the joshua tree, achtung baby) help set the precedent for an entire genre (and more) for the next decade or so it says something about your band's talent. Oh, then they did it again with "All that you can't leave behind" earlier this decade.
You know, I always hear this stupid little argument about "playing the same riffs over and over again." People do realize this label has been placed on every successful band from every genre since like forever. Stop sipping the kool-aid. Take a step back and rationally think about this... Green Day- have already used every single power chord progression possible Oasis- What, Noel keeps taking riffs from John Lennon? Coldplay- U2? The National- Just listen to Boxer and tell me what the riffs sound like... Yngwie Malmsteen- sweep picking over and over again I've heard people say this about... the cure, r.e.m., modest mouse, interpol, weezer, RHCP, etc... I still have no clue what it even means. Are same "riffs" = to guitar? Please do tell.....
In the meantime, here's something to chew on:

Two of U2's biggest hits from this decade. What do we hear/see here? Well, for one.... they don't use the same chord progressions at all. Also, we hear how awesome they are So, how is it the same riffs recycled?
Sheet Music for reference: http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/scorchVPE.asp?ppn=SC0017661 http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtdVPE.asp?ppn=MN0039075
I had no idea the situation was so dire, but I guess it's a loaded topic anyway. Some of these are no where near iconic, but I'm not sure what's worse here, posting a good song that isn't iconic, or posting a bad one that is. I was hoping I might see a glimmer of hope in the songs presented, but sadly... thongsong and who let the dogs out set the bar. What about something like 15 Step from Radiohead on in rainbows... I'm not saying it should be everyone's favorite, but there are reasons that could be seen as iconic for 2000's for a great many people (not everyone). Plus I think it's a great song.
It's all subjective. Some will say the Flaming Lips, while others will say Linkin Park. But in the end, it doesn't even matter...
Fantastic post man, you're dead on. Riffs are Riffs, power chords are power chords, and heavy metal is just scales after bloody scales, taken from the blues.
Everything U2 has put out since the Achtung Baby has been mediocre at best so saying they stayed relevant for 30 years is not correct. They were great for ONE decade only and that was the 80's. You want to be U2 now? All you need are two things. Spoiler Spoiler
Great! I'm glad you addressed the points I made in response to your initial remarks. Well done...
At this point I shouldn't even reply since you seem to be either trolling or completely ignorant. I'll do it anyways though...
You do realize that a very good chunk of their success came in the 90's right? I mean especially seeing as how "achtung baby" was released in that decade. So they were at least good, if not very good during that decade. In the 00's their first two albums averaged an 80 and a 79 on metacritic. Those ratings are pretty above average comparative to everything else being released. http://www.metacritic.com/music/alpha/u
So yeah, saying they have stayed relevant for close to 3 decades is correct.
Who the hell is kayne?
As for Kanye:

I see there are a lot older people on this board. I'm only 21, but my music tastes are older than most people my age. I listen to music clear back to the 50's, and I hate what these past few years have done to mainstream music. I think the problem is my musical tastes have stopped growing, and I've become closed minded. I'm starting to think the music I like is the only "legitimate" music out there, which is something I promised myself I would never do. Now I force myself to listen to some Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato every once in a while, and you know what? Once you strip away the preconceived biases, they aren't horrible. Sure, the rocking guitar licks are all but extinct, but the tune is catchy and the lyrics are honest. I can enjoy music like that. It's not my favorite, but I can enjoy it. Fact is, times are changing, whether or not you want to accept it or not. The older generation of decades past hated the Beatles, Hendrix, and Elvis, just like todays older folks hate on Ke$ha, Bieber, and Gaga. Hate on me if you want, but the reality is that they are today's greats, and they may prove to be just as revolutionary as the old timers. Or maybe not. I guess time will tell.
