I never had a problem in NYC, Jersey City, Chicago, Atlanta, Portland, Providence or Pittsburgh and I lived in each place for a while. Wandered into some scary neighborhoods in Baltimore, D.C. and Albuquerque but still no trouble. Same goes for a lot of redneck roadside places in the South. Held up at gunpoint in Houston and injured by a hit and run driver in Amsterdam so I have to call those the most dangerous.
it's essentially the upper west side. 116th and bway is where the seinfeld diner is located. columbia U is perfectly fine. riverside drive and west end is full of upper crust elite. 116th and morningside is kind of no man's land, but it is the beginning of harlem and if the name harlem scares you then you shouldn't be there by yourself because people will smell fear. i still don't get why people are so afraid of nyc
It was a little more understandable when I lived there (87-91). But these days there's almost nowhere safer.
