There are a couple occasions I have encountered that I would call them dangerous. I remembered when I was still a teenager, I hung around the local video game center quite a lot. There was once a group, probably 10 - 12, triad gangsters rushed into the game center heading towards a couple guys who just played opposite to me and my friend. My friend and I were playing arcade game together, Street Fighter 1, 1942 or Double Dragon, I can't remember, at that time. While chairs/stools flew over my head and the gangsters caught one of the guys just behind me and they started hit him hard. At first I wanted to ran out of the game center but my friend stopped me. He said I'd better stay still or the gangsters would have thought I was with their target and went after me. Another incident happened in a billiard club house. The hit-men were more "serious" that time as they brought those butcher knives with them. The scene was pretty funny as all the players in the club house not "invovled" were freezed like a statue (not even dare to look what happened) when the incident took place, I being one of them. When those hit-men left, I guess nearly all the players in the club house, including me and my friends, ran off immediately. The games were on the house that evening. That being said, Hong Kong is still a very safe city.
I guess its all relative to everyone's experience. The one consistent I'm seeing is New Orleans and Houston. Houston is understandable since most of the posters spent a good amount of time there. I have to take that with a grain of salt. Odds are that if you live somewhere most of your life, most experiences will take place there. Funny how that works. Plus I could've swore that for a while there our crime rate was pretty low as far as big cities go. The post Katrina spike is different. I've been to most of the other cities mentioned and don't have too many bad experiences. Barcelona and Amsterdam were great. As for Saudi Arabia, I can buy that. Just out of curiousity, what happens to criminals in that country? I would think that has to be taken into consideration. I don't know for sure so I won't assume, but it would be nice to be enlightened on this point.
How is London dangerous??? I've been there multiple times and have never felt even close to being threatened.
we moved around a lot, finding the best rent flushing, sunnyside, bayside, jamaica, elmhurst, woodside, queensbridge, college point
Exactly. London is safer than New York is safer than Houston is safer than Chicago is safer than New Orleans (maybe).
Did you really live in all those places or are you just spitting out names you heard of? Why would you move from Bayside to Jamaica?? Doesn't make sense to me.
hell no, jersey is the worst place i have ever lived (besides philly). i got out as soon as fast as i could.
Houston lol. I was born in Houston's 2nd Ward. Can't say I remember anything bad happening from there, but I know it isn't a good neighborhood. Now I lived in Southwest Houston. My house got broken into. My dad's ol' car got stolen twice and broken into once. My aunts restaurant got broken into twice and one time my dads restaurant got shot up. Luckily we are all still okay.
Visited Kabul, Afghanistan in 2000 en route to see the Buddhas of Bamyan. Afghanistan wasn't that dangerous and lawless of a place back then, just very strict. You could get by with a proper tour guide and plenty of bribe money to get past random street thug checkpoints. Other than that I've lived near some of the most dangerous parts of New Jersey. Specfically, Newark, East Orange and Irvington. One time I got a car problem when I was driving through Irvington, NJ after visiting some friends at Seton Hall in South Orange, NJ. It was around 2:45AM as well. Luckily some nice cops stopped and asked if I needed some help. I lived in Jersey City, but one of the nicer areas of Newport for some time as well. Other areas near Liberty State Park are rough. Parts of North Houston near the wards and Acres Homes are also pretty bad. The only place where I have ever been mugged was in the middle of a convenience store in Acres Homes. I don't really feel safe in alot of parts of Houston these days whenever I visit.
The East coast is full of dangerous cities. North Philadelphia by Temple University is one of the scariest places I've ever been. Temple University Hospital is one of the busiest level I trauma centers in the country, and its not the usual car accidents they see there, its penetrating trauma (gun shots and stab wounds). Rasheed Wallaces cousin was shot just a 1/2 mile from the Hospital(and still didn't make it).
Winner. I know they've beefed up security measures for the 2010 World Cup but I won't be going because I don't trust that place. Too many horror stories.
Rio de Janiero. We were at the entrance of a Favela (slums) and I asked some kids if I could take their picture for a dollar. We had to asked the gunmen at the entrance if it was okay. They protected the neighborhood and let the druglords know if police were coming. Picture came out great.
The most dangerous local neighborhood around the Austin area is Circle C -- it's the crime capital of Central Texas.
I think the only city in which I felt uncomfortable was Acapulco, Mexico. It might have something to do with the fact that I was sleeping in the bus station -- strapped to my backpack.
