New York currently has a 70 billion dollar debt. Texas (a fairly republican legislature) currently has a 15 billion dollar surplus. I don't agree with your statement

    that's nice,

But I'd like to go back and address the question I asked. You want to deny help to first responders of 911 because of how the costs break down?

You act like those are the only two options? How about a third, a new bill that correctly pays for all the health care needs of the responders.

So you do see a difference between say a firefighter in Houston and a first responder in New York (or would you support federal health care for both)? Can I ask what it is? Personally, I see two people people who do a risky job and are under-paid for their work. I say they are are both courageous but equally courageous.

Similar to your absurb claim about the 9/11 plane flying through the mosque building, neither of these statements is remotely true.

    New York:

    http://publications.budget.state.ny.us/eBudget1011/fy1011littlebook/FinancialPlan.html

The economic downturn continues to exact a toll on New York State’s finances. In the Mid-Year Update, the Division of the Budget estimated that the General Fund had a budget gap of $3.2 billion in the current year and $6.8 billion in 2010-11. The Deficit Reduction Plan approved in December 2009 provided $2.7 billion in savings, leaving a deficit of $500 million still remaining in the current year.

    Texas:

    http://www.texastribune.org/texas-taxes/2011-budget-shortfall/

A budget shortfall is projected at anywhere between $11 to $17 billion as lawmakers head into the 2011 session, according to projections from economists and the Comptroller's office. Texas writes budgets biennially, or in two-year terms, so the shortfall affects the 2012-2013 state budget.

You really should stop lying to make your points, especially when you can easily be proven wrong. Or, if you actually thought these things to be true, you should realize that whoever is feeding you this nonsense is lying to you and making you look stupid.

I am not sure you understand how to read either of these things you posted.

Texas (10.7 billion surplus in 2008) is higher now

New York (64.8 billion in debt in Jan 1009) is higher now

sure, I will start with two very basic questions.

    1. You will answer this question TRUE or FALSE

    8 = 9

    2. Choose the option below which contains more dots:

    a) . . . . . . . .

    or

    b) . . . . . . . . .

John Stewart is such an awesome guy. Colbert as well. I'm not a big fan of Stewart's comedy, but I can tell that he tries so hard to make his point in a comical way although he is in fact deeply deeply personally upset with the things he talks about.

There is a real genuineness about him.

    Thanks for the vid!

Damn, I was taking tallanvor seriously for awhile there. Dude, there's a handful of liberal leaning posters on this board that will make fun of you for being misinformed. Some automatically assume that a poster with a misinformed opinion is an evil blatant liar or something. It doesn't help create a dialog in here, though this is a poo flinging forum and all sides do it.

That said, please read your own link and not just the headlines. The "surplus" is a $8 billion rainy day fund created in 1988. That's not a surplus where the state takes in more money this year, or next, or the next. The article you linked to states:

Texas is having a $11 billion short fall next year. There will be cuts.

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt of just being misinformed. I hope you prove me right instead of being another lie-spewing poo flinger in here.

Really? So if a firefighter saved your life, got injured in the process and turned out was here illegally you wouldn't support health care for them?

Yeah I realized this article didn't make my case that's why I prefaced with "Does this help you" (because it does. I should of put a "?" a the end of my statement). It was always my understanding that the Texas government had a surplus, I am gonna have to do some more research, but right now I am thinking I was wrong. I still hold to my original argument that most Republican legislatures (North Dakota, Texas, Utah) are far better off financially then New York.

I would hesitate comparing ND and UT to NY or CA. The only one up there comparable is TX and as you note your comparison of Texas is problematic.

Yes I would, but I wouldn't support the idea of using force to make others pay for his health care which is what this law proposes.

If I was being perfectly honest I would not promote giving federal money to any of the first responders(don;t mistake this for the Republicans view). Payment of fire fighters is usually handled on a state level with state funding. I realize this is a special case (with so many hurt). For special cases, I would like to see it handled privately with donations and charities not the federal government. Once the federal government gets involved in something (in this case paying for firefighters and cops) its hard to get rid of them.

Fair enough - you weren't lying; you were either misinformed or trying to be misleading. The rainy day fund is not a comparable statistic to debt, and Texas has plenty of debt of it's own. It also has cash in the rainy day fund - sort of like a person might have both a mortgage and savings.

Texas, as of 2008, had over $30B in debt of it's own:

    http://www.thecypresstimes.com/arti...D_BUDGET_STATE_DEBT_DOUBLED_UNDER_PERRY/23832

According to our Texas Constitution, the amount of money spent to pay back debt in Texas cannot exceed 5% of our general revenue. As of August 31, 2008, our debt payments were at 4.09% and the Legislative Budget Board puts that number at 4.27% in May 2009. That means 85% percent of our credit limit is used up. Our debt went from $12 billion in 2000, to $31 billion in 2008.

Texas is certainly healthier than New York for a variety of reasons. However, simply put, the comparative numbers you used are not comparable statistics.
