firstly stop looking at this without the context. the context was poor black people in new orleans. the overwhelming majority of the black folks were poor and those were the same folks who were left. the same folks the US gov't as well as the local gov't did little for. im not positive about this stat but something like 1 out of 3 black kids lives grows up in poverty. that number is staggering by itself. when taken into account with the fact that the poverty level in the US is extremely frugal...its devastating.
First of all, your stat means that 2 of 3 black kids DON'T grow up in poverty. Last time I checked, 2/3 is 66% which is what I would easily call a majority. Secondly, the studies done by organizations after the Katrina evacuation showed that white's were disproportionately affected in a negative way accounting for more deaths and destruction than their percentage of the population. Lastly, it's amazing that you say the US poverty level is frugal. Try living in Mexico or other countries if you think the US poverty level is "frugal." I have family in Mexico doing MUCH, MUCH worse than poor in the United States. If we're talking compared to the rest of the US that's one thing. But to say the US poverty level is "frugal" just shows a lack of knowledge of the true meaning of poor.
