would it be overkill to start a new thread saying they matched? haha...would that be number 9 on the front page?
I would ask you to remember how effective Landry was last season during our hot streak, especially the Pacer game. Despite being injured, he also didn't back down during the playoffs (except for the one rebound). He looked like he belonged. Don't underestimate how much Landry can contribute in 10-20 mins/game. I'm also not sold on Artest at PF except against certain teams. He is a perimeter defender, not a post defender. He also isn't the greatest rebounder. But if Ron Ron makes up for it on offense, fine. Honestly, there was zero doubt the Rockets would match the offer.
They're gonna sign him. $3 million per season is pocket change. Landry was probably the biggest reason we sustained the 22 streak when Yao went down.
And, further, Morey said in a Q&A posted yesterday by Jason Friedman that he considered the offer to be "fair". Frankly, I don't see how an offer of less than $2 million/year could be considered fair value for Landry. Maybe that was just gamesmanship on his part.
Absolutely. It's about driving the market for the player... if the offer that Morey gave him was that low, it was all about creating his value (and assessing it) You can always offer more, but you can't go backwards.
That's the salary of a 9th or 10th pick. Considering his injury history and the strange mid-season injury cover up Baker tried to maneuver. A good offer IMO.
Agreed. Baker and Morey did there jobs well I have to say. The key to this being "fair market value" is the team option. If he bombs, we are only on the hook for 6 million over 2 years and is effectively an expiring contract next year. If he does great, we have a very productive rotation PF on the cheap (3 mil a year) for 3 years. If the Rockets offer was 5.4 mil over 3 years with a player option, that is not significantly different risk/reward than the one he got. Some cheaper, yes (5.4 guaranteed versus 6 guaranteed), but that is some balanced out by the fact if Landry blows up we have him signed in year 3 at a good rate and can delay negotiation another year on the next contract. We can't emphasize enough the team option component, it makes about 35% of the value contract at our discretion.
