It's an easy plan lets trade scola, martin and Lee for picks because they have value and play all the young players. Sign no free agents and lets see what young players come through and develop. After doing this we should have a top five pick and potentially a franchise player. Also with the trades of martin, Scola and lee we might be able to get another lotto pick in one of the deepest drafts in recent years. This is the year to get as many picks as possible

Excuse me sir, we weren't making this trade to try to make Pau the CENTER point of this team. You think we'd make him the franchise player? We were going to pair him up with Nene OR save cap space THEN bid on players next season. By trading our core we were gambling to do exceptionally well or to do very poorly to get a better draft pick.

Pretty positive that Morey wasn't making this trade because he thought if we had Pau we were going to win the championship. Please don't be delusional sir, there were other moves in mind. You aren't a GM so don't act like you know exactly what was in line for Morey.

Not every 5 or 6 seed team is created equal. Who's on the roster doesn't matter are you insane? We need a cornerstone, a legit superstar. Anytime you have a truly amazing player like a dirk and some role players you have a chance but with a gasol and some role players you have zero chance.

Yeah, I can see what he means. I know I've complained a lot about how much we've stacked assets but have never made any moves with them. I think this was the year, and Pau was the first major piece. Now that its fallen through, he's lost face in front of his team and I can imagine it will be very difficult negotiating trades the remainder of the offseason.

The problem here is that no one is going to give unprotected 1st round picks for anyone on our roster. Not a team that has any reasonable chance to get a top 5 pick in the first place. So protected picks basically mean we never see a top 5 from any picks obtained. And a good chance that those picks are protected even greater than top 5 given your getting someone in return whose salary must be in the ballpark of those players traded (since you cant trade a player for a pick only). And the teams that are likely to make the kind of trade you speak of are going to be teams whose 1st rounders are 15-30, not top 5.

Not true at all what you are describing is a boom or bust scenario we make this trade and either do great or do horrible. That is not the scenario by doing this trade it would make us middle of the road no doubt about that. Also a team featuring gasol and nene is not enough of an attraction to convivnce another superstar to join the mix

Exactly the top 5 pick would come from us after we play our young players this season and in this deep draft i would love to have some picks anywhere between 10-20.

It's easy to say, trade so and so for picks. What team will trade lightly protected picks in a deep draft for Scola and Martin? And Les Alexander, the owner/your boss, has made up his mind that you can't tank. What do you do now?

I think new orleans would be a team that might give us a pick for martin or Luis their desperate for depth. Another team is a veteran team like san antonio we trade them a guy like scola and hope they have some injuries. Duncan and ginobili get hurt before you know it their lotto bound and we have their pick

So you're trading away our best players based on hopes that the team they go to suffer injuries and fail? No matter who you trade them to, there's most likely gonna be some protection on that pick. How do you sell that to your fan base? We traded Luis Scola and Kevin Martin for draft picks? You can't tank. You think Les is gonna fall for that? Rebuild while remaining competitive, means keep the team floating around .500, so what do you do now Mr. GM?

Keeping the team around .500 is the worst possible move they can make. As a owner and a gm the goal is not to sell to your fan base but its to do whats best for the team. Even if the picks don;t work out by playing our young players we would have that top 5 pick were looking for

I agree with you here. If Les would understand that tanking can help get you that elusive superstar, we could've been done with sucking by now. They should've tanked after they announced Yao would miss the entire season a couple of years ago.

You know what's funny, I can totally see Luis Scola and Kevin Martin consoling Morey about the failed trade, while Morey just cries and cries and cries.

    This can seriously happen.

Morey should not feel too bad about the situation. At least now he can screw up in the next three years, in addition to the last five, and still escape blame. He can now point towards Stern as the culprit for the future mediocrity of the Rockets. Stern just saved him from himself. What a lucky guy.
