Maybe it's just college students doing data entry for free to glisten up their CV?

i didn't know keeping stats was cutting edge.

that's what it is. The job ad earlier this year was for students or recent grads. They had to prove they know stats, but they weren't expected to create any formulas. The ad said specifically that they would be measured against the stuff Morey already uses/created.

imo, this is another example of Money Ball. Does anyone really expect a Money Ball guy (who is a brilliant statistician in his own right) would pay 15-20 guys $1m to do something the Rockets already have. Come on...think about it!

This is a Money Ball hire per is modus operandi. Hire many, many people at very low salary just to find one or two keepers.

computers, rationals, theories can only make a good GM.

The best GM relies on luck, intuition and god.

God? Are you serious? Professional sports have become a pretty unholy or, at least unethical, place in modern times.

They are part time and I am pretty sure they aren't making 50k a year.

That makes the most sense. I couldn't believe the Rocks would shell out that kind of bread for that many stats analysts.

Someone give me Morey's contact information, I'll send him the spreadsheets I've created the past few years to help him evaluate the talent/value of players. Maybe he saw them when I posted them a few weeks ago. They don't have to pay me, provide computers or even coffee. If it'll help the Rockets, I'll do it for free (well...within reason (had to cover myself because I know what I'll get from you guys if I don't!)). Of course, now that he has 15-20 guys doing this job, you would think they've covered everything. Heyp made a good point, I'm sure they're paying very little to eventually come out with the top 1-2 people for the future.

I know stats won't give you the whole story, but you have to admit that for the past two offseasons he's been hitting the nail on the head every time. He has yet to miss on a draft pick. And take away the stats-influenced decisions... and he's still a good GM. People say we passed on Greene when we draft Batum, only to turn around and net not only Greene but an early second rounder out of our draft pick? Need I say more? The Scola deal?

I think his weakness is he won't take the big risk, all of his moves have been really low key moves.

i'm not gonna say brooks was a miss, but he didn't exactly 'hit the nail on the head' with that one, not yet anyway.

same could be said about dorsey and greene. they could both fail. but i 'trust in morey' indeed.

GENIUS! Enough said! He did the Battier deal and still believes it is a landslide victory for the rockets. Morey thinks Battier is the superior player but is surprised that Gay has played ok for a very bad team.

When we win it next year, it will be because of YAO and Tmac, Coach A and Morey!

Then I don't think we should be calling them "statisticians." Salary.com says a Statistician I in the Houston area averages $45k a year.

45k a year at full time.

If they are making 45k a year with part time hours I am on my way to Houston ;)

If you believe Battier is better than Gay fine, but if Morey is surprised that Gay played ok on a bad team that shows he didn't think anything of him and was mistaken. Gay also has genuine upside and can get better.I'm not implying that he will become an all star. Les is not a basketball player but he felt that the Rockets didn't get enough for the 8th pick.I do feel that DM has done a better job than CD because he has been able to get value in the lower half of the draft which is a harder thing to do.

I think denniscd might have meant that Morey is surprised Gay's only played ok for a really bad team (that's why he used "but" instead of "and"). If your team sucks as much as the Grizzlies, then it should be much easier to put up nice numbers.
