Yes. LOL. My bad Villanova it was with Randy Foye and Allen Ray. Gritty guard oriented team. I always thought Lowry was the heart of the team.
Thanks, I missed the first 2 questions in my recap, as I joined the show in progress, I was able to update my recap with the podcast. DD
actually, i don't find that suprising since to me it was always pretty obvious from the beginning and i'm pretty sure jvg is a lot smarter than me.
I remember that year. They had four guards everyone was talking about; Ray was the emotional leader; Foye was the leading scorer; Lowry was the fastest of them all, and he was only a freshman at the time, but already he had a reputation as a lockdown defender; and Mike Nardi was...well, I don't remember anything about Nardi except that he was white, LOL.
I enjoy Morey's honesty. You can tell he comes from a financial background. My girlfriend recently interviewed at his old consulting company, Parthenon. They revere him like a god there. Anyways, I'm pretty excited about this deal. Lowry is the type of guard that has become almost unguardable in today's hands-off, no-hand checking NBA. A bit of a tangent, but I did a statistics project my freshmen year about scoring tendencies of players below 6'7" before and after the rules changes after the NBA lockout. The top 50 "small" players' average ppg rose significantly by around 3 points after handchecking was banned; impressive considering the 90s were dominated by Jordan, we still saw a jump in scoring by smaller players (even after controlling for an overall rise in scoring in the league). Lowry is exactly that type of player--blows by his man, has the strength to finish, good passer. People complain that he is small, but a short, thick, and quick guard is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Plus, he plays lockdown D.
DD, I'm not sure that Morey should cover up his true feelings. I'm not a T-Mac fan by any means, but I do believe that his knee hurts when he plays. But what we hear is that the pain is a mental rather than a physical limitation. That makes me that T-Mac is a pansy. If his injury is really severe, we haven't heard that. T-Mac just says he's out for the season and that he's going to have microfracture surgery, which this thread shows to be an option not a mandatory panacea. -P1st, S2nd
I agree, Drew. Kyle Lowry is an absolute defensive stud. He is top five among point guards in many defensive measure I like such as stop% (estimate of percentage of possessions that a player "stops", a stop being a turnover or a missed field goal), fouls drawn %, steal % (not top five but still up there), and adjust DRtg (A variation of DRtg created by Dean Oliver, estimated points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted means that it assumes that the 4 other players are average defensive players so that players on bad defensive teams are not penalized). I might do a more detailed statistical analysis on Lowry's defensive prowess but I probably won't.
More that I have studied Lowry, even though I was already high on Lowry, I'm even more interested. Thing that stands out to me the most: Lowry draws a foul 19.8% on field goal attempts. Rafer only drew a foul 5.9% on FGAs. Hell, Yao only draws a foul 16.3% on FGA.
I don't think Morey was being disrespectful or called out T-Mac in any way. He just stated the facts. Some players play through it, but the pain is just too much for Mac to handle. Last I checked, everybody reacts to injuries differently. It's not like he hasn't tried playing on it. He's done that, doesn't seem to be working well or fast enough. Morey even stood up for Mac and said he is limited by his injuries which is why you see a difference in the team without Mac. If Morey believes a healthy T-Mac can help us, why can't the fans? Obviously he knows more about basketball than a lot of us. And don't give me that, "Oh he's suppose to say stuff like that. blah blah." He didn't have a problem being honest about T-Mac not being able to take the pain so I don't see him sugarcoating his answers on his thought about T-Mac and the team.
