Realistically, why in the world would he sign with Houston instead of San Antonio?

And how do you know the rockets haven't offered him the MLE? Unfortunately for us, the rockets are generally regarded as lower down the totem pole than the Spurs. If both of the MLEs are out there, it's not exactly hard to guess whose he'll take.

Aging team versus an up and coming one?

Also, he would start in Houston, and will have to split time in San Antonio.

As I said above (see post #13), the Clippers will have to renounce their rights to Maggette in order to sign Baron Davis and re-sign Brand. That means that the Clippers ABSOLUTELY CANNOT sign-and-trade Maggette.

    I agree with this.

If the Spurs can generate interest from Maggette with just a multiyear MLE deal, I don't see why we can't do the same. In fact, we can arguably offer greater offensive freedom, and a player's coach who can tailor to his strengths. Plus we all know how scary the team is when Yao and Mac are healthy. So if he wants to win and wants to play a big part in winning, Houston is a better choice.

If we get Maggette, I'd take the hit in losing Landry.

    Marion

    For

    Battier
    Bobby Jackson
    Luther Head
    Chuck Hayes

    1. Miami gets a defensive 3 to complement Beasley and Wade in Battier (much like the role Posey played when they won the championship)

    2. They get a spot up shooter they've been missing since Kapono bolted in Head

    3. They get a power forward that can come in and give them defense and rebounding in Hayes

    4. They get an average back up point guard in Bobby Jackson.

    5. Jackson's and Head's contracts come off the books (about 8.5 mil) after next season.

    6. This works under the cap. :D :D

I wouldn't really call them "aging". Duncan has two or three more dominant years, Manu and Parker are young and Bowen is showing no signs of slowing down.

All the Rockets have are two superstars who have not been able to stay healthy multiple years in a row. If I was a free agent, I would choose SA over Houston.

SA plus Magette=better team than Houston plus Magette

EDIT: I also don't understand why it's Morey's fault that other players want to sign with other teams. It isn't as if the Rockets are the most attractive destination out there

I don't see how Maggette is this enamored with the Spurs considering the state of their team NOW. If you were talking, say, 3 years ago, ya, I might understand. I feel that Houston has a lot more to offer, especially if you are considering the fact that with Maggette, he is automatically the third guy, no questions asked. In SA, it might not be so certain considering you have their "Big 3" in Parker, Manu and Duncan. Here, he would certainly get his shots.

I agree. I've been saying that all along, but alot of people wants to keep Landry at all cost.

    Maggette>>> Landry

So let Landry walk if we can get Maggette.

OR perhaps Magette thought to himself, "Man, if you replace Michael Finley with me on last year's Spurs team, they go to the finals"

I would have loved to have had Magette on this roster, but we can't expect every player to automatically want to play here when almost every team can offer the same amount that we can.

Sounds good, so if there is minimal risk in pursuing a top free-agent, why hasn't Morey done it?

The target doesn't have to be Maggette though since he is most likely not coming here over San Antonio.

That's the other thing the Spurs have on us - they can guarantee a starting spot.

That is not how it works.....

If Maggette is renounced, and he signs a MLE contract, it is a done deal......can't sign until July 9th.

We would not be able to sign Landry if he got an offer more than the LLE.....

Is this a player you go over the luxury tax for? I think so(without losing a key piece), so get it done Morey.

    for real.

if i'm maggette, i'm fast realizing theres not a lot of money out there, so i am best served positioning myself to win.

the spurs are a model franchise. they are the only team besides the lakers to win a championship from the west this decade. they have a spot for him. he gets to play with a HOF big man. in a packed arena, with devoted fans. for the best coach in the NBA. i mean, seriously, are we questioning why he would go?

to play devil's advocate, if he signs with the rockets, what exactly is the advantage to him? lower expectations? proximity to galveston?

You can only use the cap room you have, plus the exceptions, to sign free agents.

If teams could just sign free agents for any amount regardless of their cap room, then any team could sign any player for any amount

Don't panic! I believe the rockets will have better chance than Maggette by the trade deadline.

In addition, I cannot see how good the spurs would be if they add Maggette. There’s a lot of overlap between he and Manu! The rockets will still be able to beat them next season.
