I just read an article that says Tmac's shooting form puts a lot of pressure on his left leg. And I noticed that he always landed on his left foot, which explains why now his knee is injured.

no, he got hit in the same knee that he injured again in game 3. it was a pretty deep bruise he suffered in the season that never fully healed. and once it got hit again, it's gonna hurt pretty bad.

    I don't know...he's atleast right behind Lebron.

I think Lebron has better passing talent, in terms of being able to fit a pass through a key hole. Tracy has better vision and makes better passing decisions, in terms of making a pass at the right time to the right player.

They're both probably in the top 10-15 of non-PG passers.

I'm shocked it took this long to be said but I agree with Pmac, Lebron is slightly a better passer then Mac. But it is close, both players would average way more assist if some of the guys on their team would finish more consistently.

Tmac settles for too many outside shots now.

as for his free throw shooting i always felt that tmac has been a poor free through shooter (and for that matter luther is a lot worse than he should be) because of their shooting forms. Not their releases or anything but their lower body. Both tracy and luther tend to kick a leg out or shoot off of one leg to get a their balance and shoot the ball. At the free throw line its a set shot no jumping or anything it throws off their overall rhythm.

if you look at kobe, melo and all they all jump with two feet for their jumpshot.

i bet if tracy jumped for his FTs he would be a lot better

His mid range shot is fine. The problem is his shot selection - he takes too many shots standing on the 3 pt line (not behind, but on the line so it's a long 2) and this really hurts his fg%. I don't mind when he takes the 15-18 ft jump shot, but I don't like it when he's farther out standing on the 3 pt line.

McGrady is nice from 15 feet in, almost deadly from that range even when he's hurt. Calvin Murphy if he was still calling games would be all over him for not taking more midrange jumpers (as he did everyone)

Thing is everything mentioned in this thread how he can improve is correctable. You cant help injuries but things like shot selection, working on shooting mechanics, free throws, driving in more, all those things sound like stuff players improve upon with work.

Not saying he doesnt work, just that those are work-type things

    It's very simple.

Messed up back = no continuity on his shot

Call me crazy, but I think both of these guys are better passers than some PGs right now.

Lemme take that a step further...

messed up back + knee issues = no continuity or as much elevation on his shot

I think Tmac being able to get up on his jump shot is key. He shoots in a straight line because he's used to being up above defenders (and even with the rim) when he releases... so there isn't much of an arch on his shot.

If he can't get the elevation to match the arch, then he's going to rim them out or bounce them off.

but I agree with the idea that he and lebron are quite possibly better than a few of the point guards at distributing the ball (even on their own teams- though rafer does a pretty good job when he actually handles the ball)

Mcgrady and Lebron are better than 70% of the point guards in this league at distributing the ball.

Yeah, but I think LeBron is better because he is so powerful when he drives so people all clutter in his way... then he dishes it out to his teammates for the open shots

I have a tough time with any "best in history" statements, and this one is no exception. I like McGrady, and he is indeed ONE of the best passing swingmen to have played in the NBA. I would not agree, even as a homer, that he is THE best in history.

Guys I feel are/were better passers at the 2 or 3 spots:
Jordan and Pippen (say what you will, but the triangle made their passing IQs jump to the highest possible tier - the BUlls DESTROYED teams with their passing and motion)

Magic - maybe he doesn't count, since he's usually listed as a PG, but he played a lot at the 2 and 3 over his career.

LeBron - he at least needs to be in the discussion. He's been a 6-7 assist guy every year, where McGrady's been a 5-6 assist guy in his prime.

Clyde Drexler - the offense ran through him both as a Blazer and a Rocket, and he was as good a passer as anyone we've had as a two. IMO, he was better in that role than McGrady has been.

Paul Pressy - the "original" point forward.

Again, I'm not saying McGrady isn't a great passer at the 2/3. I just don't think I'd agree that he's THE BEST IN NBA HISTORY.

    I agree with Morey.

BTW, I am looking forward to watching the rockets vs. the lakers in the 2nd round. Tmac vs Kobe, Scola vs Gosal, Battier vs Kobe, Landry vs Turiaf, Adelman vs Jackson,... That will be the series of this playoffs. I couldn't wait!!!

    That's an understatement...

I always wonder why some teams don't run a Big Ball type of game with 2 big guards. I know the Bulls used to do it and i think it can be very effective when you have two big guards who can pass well. I think the rockets might wanna think about pairing tmac with a guy who can pass, shoot, and finish like the Cavs did bringing in Delonte West.

Everybody hates to mention someone playing now as the anything OF ALL TIME and i definitely don't think he's the best passing wing player. Bird and Pippen were better. He is definitely in the conversation though, which means something.
