I can't stand Jay Mohr. How dare Morey go on his show to give it an ounce of legitimacy and credibility. Dude does nothing but talk because he likes to hear himself talk.

Serious question... is Jay Mohr mentally handicapped? I've never listened to his show before (this being the first time), but it sounds like he is doing a comedy impression of what bad sports radio talk show hosts sound like.

Yea, that's pretty much his schtick. "Every-man sports guy who's funny." I had enjoyed him in guest spots in the past, but since getting his regular spot on 790 I've been nothing but disappointed. Not because he doesn't offer great analysis. I never expected him to do that. But because he hasn't been funny either.

JM: Joining me on the Progressive Celebrity Hotline, safe to say maybe the happiest man in America: Daryl Morey, Houston Rockets general manager. Welcome back, I think this is your fourth time on Jay Mohr Sports, it’s working buddy!

DM: (laughing) This is the plan. I think Dwight Howard might be the happiest guy.

JM: Yeah, Dwight Howard very happy to no longer be a Los Angeles Laker or an Orlando Magic, found a home with you. Here’s the thing, you did it – Kevin McHale, brilliantly, with a second string essentially, that big game 6 heartbreaker for Clipper fans. Which I don’t really think there are any real Clipper fans, not like the Rockets. And I’ve said this before, I’m not saying it because you’re here, going into game 7, the mojo, everything was going your way, you did it without even guys that you need, guys like Patrick Beverley. Are we going to see Patrick Beverley game one against Golden State, my brother?

DM: No, no we’re unfortunately not. We wish he was available, but he will not be.

JM: Is he going to be available at all during the series?

DM: Uhh…our understanding is no.

JM: Then why even take the cast off? Make him keep the cast on until next year as a joke…Daryl Morey, losing Chandler Parsons, I thought you guys were crazy. Man did you prove me wrong. Obviously I know you like him but Josh Smith, Corey Brewer, Pablo Prigioni! – very underrated, 38 year old, what was he a 36 year old rookie with the Knicks? You pick him up, you’re getting guys on the cheap - I know that doesn’t sound nice but there’s no nice way to put it - how the hell do you pull this off mid-season to get all these guys?

DM: And Trevor Ariza too obviously he came in and has been a big help. We keep our eyes on guys for a long time. Corey Brewer is someone we’ve been very interested in and you know finally we’re able to trade for him just because Minnesota started slow, I think that was the key. Josh Smith was somebody we tried to trade for when we added Dwight, but we couldn’t get the trade done. And Pablo’s been someone we always admired in Europe – he’s always been a big game player, won a gold medal, won multiple championships, part of that Argentinean team that’s maybe the most famous international team outside of the Dream Team and we love having those guys – we’ve had Scola, we’ve had Delfino, we’ve had Prigioni. They’re a special group that knows how to win.

JM: Out of the guys that we’re talking about, or any guy really - you know what you’re getting out of Dwight Howard, you know what you’re getting out of James Harden every damn night, we know this. Which guy did you feel like you rolled the dice and you knew in your heart that this was a right fit? Maybe people gave you a little push back and now you’re kind of sitting back like, “Told ya so, nailed it, look at this cat.”

DM: Oh man, well I think Josh Smith is that. Obviously you’ve got another team waiving him with $25-30M to go on his contract. We always felt he was a guy who was talented but he needed to get in the right structure that more believed in him and played to his strengths. He’s had some bumpy relationships with past organizations and we always thought it was, because you know our background on him was he was a good guy and he’s been that with us. We always felt like they were always fighting some of his natural tendencies and we felt like if, you know, in our structure we could make it work and he would thrive, and you know obviously it worked better than anyone could have anticipated – even us. But he’s obviously been a key and Coach McHale making the move to insert him in the starting lineup was very important. It allowed Terrence who’s more of a scorer and less of a facilitator to bolster the bench, which has been not as strong with Motiejunas out for the whole playoffs. So yeah, Kevin’s been pushing the right buttons and I really think he’s gotten the most out of Josh Smith more than anybody else in his career.

JM: Daryl Morey, have you accepted Mark Cuban’s apology?

DM: I don’t think he apologized and he didn’t need to, so you know, he’s won a ring so I admire everything he does. I think everyone’s beating him up now for acquiring Rondo and stuff like that. I think that’s the kind of thing you need to do - you need to roll the dice and sometimes it works out and he goes and wins the Finals when they weren’t supposed to - like we’re hoping to do - and one year it didn’t work out. But if you’re not rolling the dice in this business you’re just going to go sideways, win 40 to 45 games every year and not accomplish much.

JM: When teams tank or they play poorly and they’re sellers at the deadline etc., can you once and for all, because I’ve been beating this drum for two years, the amount of revenue and just excitement that gets plugged into a city, just by simply hosting one playoff game, isn’t that worth just getting your act together and not tanking and being buyers instead of sellers at the deadline?

DM: Well I think it depends on the city a little bit. I think a city like Houston where there’s a lot of people who’ve moved to Houston, there isn’t as much of a tradition like say Boston like where I worked, where fathers and sons are going to games since the late 40’s or early 50’s. I do think those kinds of cities it does make a bigger difference. And I’ll say this it depends on your goal. If your goal is championship or bust then I do think what I would call the aggressive rebuilding strategies are almost required. I mean we’re hoping to avoid that, we've been able to stay out of having a losing season; we were a winning club all throughout losing Yao and Tracy and to now. But I would say that if we do pull this off it’s actually not something that’s been done, or at least in the 30 years we've studied no one’s been able to do that. So I would say the aggressive rebuilding strategies are more tried and true ways to put yourself in a position to be a title contender.

JM: Daryl Morey, I’m going to be at the House of Blues in October in Houston, if you are in town I would love to play you at table tennis.

DM: You’re saying that now, when we actually play…

JM: No listen, $1000 to whatever your favorite charity is and if I win you put $1000 to my favorite charity. Let’s do this.

DM: Let’s make it 10, let’s make it 10…

JM: I work in radio, Daryl! Are you high?!

DM: (laughing)

JM: I know they don’t drug test general managers apparently. I work in radio.

DM: (laughing) I’ll do $1000 to charity with you for sure.

JM: Yeah, we’ll hype it up and if people want to come watch, whatever, we’ll figure it out, but let’s do that. I’ll get in touch with you off air brother and we’ll uh

DM: Well, come to Vegas. There’s a great NBA table tennis event that benefits St. Jude I believe July 17 and it’s in Vegas and it would be great to have you.

JM: Alright, but let’s exchange info I’m going to put you on with my producer because I do want to wax that ass at table tennis, Daryl Morey!

DM: (laughing)

JM: Win, lose, or draw, keep everybody healthy and get Patrick Beverley out of that cast. Just tell him to dribble with his feet or something.
