Let's not associate me with other people. Giving McDyess and/or Mutombo a one yr deal will not break Les. Actually, I bet if we won a title he would make back whatever he pays in lux tax. No, I won't be satisfied if the owner isn't doing everything he can to win, when he makes it seem like he is. I won't be satisfied when you say we are all in, mortgage the future to win now (by trading away young talent like Gay or picks to get dudes to win now), and then let a few mil in lux tax stop you from getting more help when you already went all in. That's dumb. I didn't see the Celtics owner scoffing at the chance to add Cassell and PJ last year, even though they were already over the cap. I didn't see Buss shipping Odom off this summer, or not extending Bynum or signing Sasha to save some bucks. Why, because those dudes say they are trying to win NOW and they mean business. The message Les sends is "I want to help us win as long as it fits within this budget".
The Rockets need to be thinking Long, Young, and Athletic. So far, Barry looks like his tires have blown out. No more slow footed retreads.
http://www.boston.com/sports/basket...1/mcdyess_seems_to_be_steering_into_a_u_turn/ If the Cavs get McDyess maybe the Rockets have a chance at getting Anderson Varejao?
If Morey pulls off these signings (Deke & McDyess) then he will get GM of the year! McDyess is a clear upgrade to Hayes at the backup C/PF spot. Deke is going to be key if Yao goes down for any length of time. Of course, it would mean moving Head, Hayes, Francis and others to make room under the LT (or close to it). These signings do not mean there is not a plan to bring in a starting PG either. Trust in Morey. Even if it means trading away McGrady.
Remember, the thing about going over the tax is it's not only about the dollar-for-dollar tax itself. Say we were only $500k under the cap, and we get ourselves a $2.5 million player. So first of all, add in that additional $2 million, which is the amount you're over the cap. Then, calculate in the fact that 8 teams paid a total of $92.4 million in tax last year. A big portion of that is divided among the non-tax-paying teams. So divide that number by 22, and you arrive at a little over $4 million. So in the end, you're really paying $8.5 million for a $2.5 million player. That's a pretty significant investment. And I don't get the point of the Celtics comparison. If you're already over the tax, going a little farther over isn't as big a deal as being under the threshold and then going over it, as I explained above. So it seems to be a meaningless comparison.
According to RealGM a deal involving Francis, Head and Scola would work. Scola would have to interest them and Francis / Head would give them expiring contracts.
why do sooooo many people on this board think we can get Kaman? It would be great to have him but it I dont see it happening ever.
I agree that we dont need McDyess, but use him for a possible trade or keep him and trade others on our team but then again who would you trade forward wise. I dont see any of this going through, however just for no apparent reason I would love to see Head traded. Even if we only get 7 baseball bats for it. . .
So when we sign Mutumbo, whats mcdyess role on our team. If im not mistaking we would more than likely have to pay more for Mcdyess than for Mutumbo.
Mutombo is more of an insurance if Yao gets hurt and he would be a team leader for us in the locker room and in games. Mcdyess would be the one playing if we get him. Like I said, he would come in for Yao most likely when he's tired or he would play some PF for us if we need him late in game for the rebounding and defence.
On top of these very good points, realize the Celts made those signings VERY late in the year. Prorate those signings... and it's not really much money spent. Since they were already over the tax, as Drex says above, all they were adding was a couple of guys at 1 mil prorated down to 2 months or whatever..
There was a report out of LA that said the Clippers were shopping Kaman for cap relief. It was on RealGM as well as the radio station here in Dallas. If there is any truth at all in the story, the Rockets have a lot of trade assets.
Rockets wouldn't get him for the same reason too probably(cap). Plus I dont see him wanting to come off the bench for Yao. If I could get him, I would and play him as my PF with Yao and have him take the center position when Yao is tired but I dont make the calls unfortunately
It's from a song in The Music Man, a Broadway play turned into a Hollywood musical, from the early 1960's, I think. Over time, it has turned into an expression that's pretty self-explanatory. I've used it myself. Has nothing to do with Houston or SA and any river or bayou running through the two burgs. Here's the lyric, at least a couple of lines. Ya got trouble, my friend, right here, I say, trouble right here in River City. And so on.
Is he better than Scola? No Is he better than Landry? No Is he half the post defender Hayes is? No Is he rapidly approaching "washed up" status? Yes Not that our PF rotation is ideal right now or anything. Just saying, like Drexler22 mentioned: when you factory in luxury tax implications this seemingly small investment becomes much bigger. Bigger than anything McDyess could provide.
