hmm, Dwight says good things about the Rockets and Parsons, and then Parsons signs with Dwight's agent. hmm...
Just to add to this, there are no team options in Chandler's contract. It is a straight-up, four year deal with deadlines for partial guarantees turning into full salary. The only way he becomes a free agent before his four year contract is done is for us to waive him... Per BimaThug: http://rockets.clutchfans.net/3455/chandler-parsons-contract-analysis/ He will never become a restricted free agent under his current contract, so the Gilbert Arenas rule (referred to as the Poison Pill) will never apply to him.
Fegan is a super agent. He represents a lot of athletes. Parsons is gearing up to get paid and I wouldn't doubt if Parsons initiated the contact. If anything Fegan is probably telling Howard not to come to the Rockets.
heyp, the article you are citing was superseded by a subsequent piece I wrote after discovering that Parsons's contract did, in fact, have a team option. Here's the link: http://rockets.clutchfans.net/3681/chandler-parsons-contract-take-two/ Okay, off to bed...
This is the interesting parts that answers the key questions. Basically no poison pill because of the Rockets having full-bird rights, unlike the Knicks who only had early-bird with Lin.So the big question is let Parsons become a restricted free agent next summer, or an unrestricted free agent when both Lin and Asik deals have expired (assuming that they're still on the team).
OK. so, there's a team option on the 4th year, after he establishes Bird Rights, as Aleron said. So just to reiterate, for those following at home...Parsons will not become a restricted free agent, ever. The Gilbert Arenas Rule will never apply to him. Right? BimaThug? You know what that means...Morey had this all planned out. He was never going to let anyone use the Gilbert Arenas clause against him, yet he pulled it off two times in one year.
I think there was some behind the scenes agreement between Morey and Fegan on this. Morey says to Fegan, look, if you convince Dwight to come, we're gonna make Parsons a RFA next season (for reasons explained in Bimas analysis), and we'll make sure Parsons gets a nice contract ($8-9 million/year) and you a nice commission off that...everyone wins.
Most of these guys that get paid well subsequently either both underperform based on expectations or just simply lose their mojo. I just hope he doesnt stop growing once he is paid.
I'm pretty sure he hired Fegan because he wants the major endorsements that Dwight and others have been garnering from being with him. A good reason to make an appearance at the Billboard awards this weekend. We already know for a fact that Dan wants Dwight back in LA, but ultimately I do believe Dwight will do what's right for him, regardless of his agent's opinion.
Parsons WOULD become a restricted free agent if the Rockets declined their team option on him for the 2014-15 season. Any player with three or fewer years of NBA experience (other than first round picks playing on rookie scale contracts) is a restricted free agent when he hits free agency. However, since the Arenas Rule ONLY applies to players with one or two years of NBA experience, the Arenas Rule would not apply to Parsons in 2014 if he were a free agent. Chandler would be a three-year vet by then.
