But you agree that it was ok to do that in Germany and Japan (or should we have let Tojo and the Nazis take back over)?

In the other thread you say:
"There are certainly a number of Muslim clerics that I believe are not the being vessels for God to speak through. They certainly are crazy."

If a crazy person takes over, is that ok? I don't think so. Don't go Jim Jones on me.

I figured that'd get some response, although I admit its near worn out. I've seen several theories on why they're called frogs, but it sounds like you got a good one - share.

Moving to London? That's sweet. I loved my time there, simply a great city! Congrats if you do make the move. I'm not sure, where are you now?

Sir Jackie Chiles, maybe I'm not getting it. What were you pointing out?

That reply was about the "arrogance wars" and MacBeth was defending an accusation that he was "bragging about his own knowledge." He had to use the word "intelligence" in order to rebuff the claim.

"...my intelligence..." used in context of the accusation was about "knowledge" in general. Not a statement of "bragging."

Well, no. He could have said, "...my knowledge." At least it would have sounded better. ;)

Well, all of my French friends basically said the same thing...the obvious thing...the British coined it because they thought it was disgusting that the French ate frog legs. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yes, I was esssentially raised to be British, full British name and everything (so of course I rebelled and became a Francophile), so London will be grand, if I can work things out with the Courtauld. As for now I am temporarily in Houston, taking a little time off and working for the museum, trying to get a few things published (not through the museum, of course).

One difference with Germany and Iraq is that the Nazi govt. had the people behind it, in large part. Most folks in Iraq are happy to have Saddam gone, even if they aren't happy in what's happened since, and our presence there.

While I think some clerics speak craziness, I'm not voting. I think Clerics should be allowed to run to represent the people of Iraq if they wish to. Again, if we have a representational body in the govt. one person or group won't be able to take it over.

Not at the end of the war. That statement is probably true for 1933, but not for 1945. People were manipulated by the propaganda and many did not know about all the atrocities that happened, but at the end of the war, I believe that the vast majority of the people was not at all behind the Nazi government anymore and just relieved that it was over. You might say they were pounded into submission...this did not exactly happen in Iraq. If they had had to endure the same kind of war the German population had been through, you might see less insurgents there than you do now.

I agree it was through propoganda and brutal tactics that the support for the Nazis were won. And I do believe that after the truth was revealed there wasn't a strong support for the Nazis.

No, you didn't say 'they speak craziness.' You said 'they certainly are crazy.' So if they are crazy, like Jim Jones, should we just let them repress and kill their people en masse? If you want them to have full autonomy, then it would be ok with you if the majority voted for non-representational Jim Jones, not a parliament, right? After all, they are the ones who should have final say on what happens next according to you.

Yes, they should be allowed to run for office. If the IRaqis are going to have a democracy then they have to be trusted to vote for candidates that aren't crazy.

Jim Trafficant ran in the U.S. He was even elected. We survived.

As for the kind of govt. they would set up if they had full autonomy, I would hope it would be a democracy. But here you have one of the major flaws of Bush's strategy. If you try and spread democracy by invading non-threatening countries, torturing folks, and using forged documents and the like to build your case for war, you kind of hurt the image of democracy and your ability to spread it.

If instead you work to show democracy as an example, and how desirable it is, you make it much more likely that people given autonomy will choose a workable democracy as their form of govt.
