Sorry, the Golden Rule bit always annoys me. This is from Mark 12:28-31 (sorry Padgett): You might be able to derive the Golden Rule (Do unto others as you would have them do to you) from the second of these, but even that is debatable. In any case, the paramount concern is supposed to be loving God. So, I don't know why people want to pin this Golden Rule as a thumb-rule to living on Christians (including some Christians). I should have just bottled it up instead instead of wasting people's time with my sarcasm. So, I apologize and now I'll step out of this thread again now that I've explained myself.
I figured you were being sarcastic and I knew you would point that out. Obviously, the first rule should apply to Christians, but if you are not a Christian, are you not moral because you only follow rule number two?
I find it very disturbing and, yes, insulting... since I consider myself a liberal person, that people can make such sweeping statements as this and actually believe them. Lumping all "liberals" into a monolithic group is as foolish (pardon me) as lumping all "conservative" people together as a monolithic group. It's absurd, it's insulting and it's all too common in today's "religious right" political culture. Thank goodness, it's not the majority opinion in the United States.
Nice post but why must 1 and 2 be seperated? You should check out Aquinas question 94 on the nature of laws.
