you're right, I was going to write that the 94 defense was a good one. honestly in retrospect, even though the Buffalo loss was the most embarrasing the KC loss hurt the most because I believe that was their best chance of that era. And then I knew the team would be broken up because you actually had fans who thought Cody Carlson could handle starter's duty.
Absolutely nothing. It has to do with the list of being on the top 25 wife beaters of all time. OJ, AI, Carruth..... Moon. I didnt want to start a new thread about wife beaters.
So Manning is essentially 11 spots ahead of Moon (assume Moon is #26) because his team (that had a great RB and HOF WR, two things Moon never had until he got Chirs Carter when he was almost 40) got to the conference finals once and he stunk it up???
Putting up 35 points in a playoff game should be enough for the D to hold on for a win. Yes he threw the late intro but I believe that was a tipped pass. You are correct about the KC loss (as far as his turnovers), but I recall Montana converting like a 4th and 15 or something. Bottom line is he STILL gave his team a lead and the defense gave it away.
When I saw the title of the thread, I was trying to figure out what the moon had to do with a Sporting News list. Then I realized it was about the top 25 QB's and our old friend Warren. Do you think that Warren's life was the inspriration for one of the characters in Playmakers?
He threw 2 interceptions late in the Buffalo game, which led to 10 pts. The only lead we had in the KC game was 13-7. I'd hardly call that a lead a defense is undoubtedly suppose to protect. Our offense and defense lost both games. Moon shares some blame here and thats what, overall, hurts him when it comes to these rankings. When you start talking about great NFL QBs, they usually have defining moments, or something to hang their hat on. Moon has stats and thats pretty much it.
That last interception in overtime was bogus. Pass interference all the way. Dude made Malone's hold of Drexler look like a hand tap. If memory serves me correctly, we had a 10-0 halftime lead against KC, and a 20-14 lead also with just a couple of minutes left in the 4th. We should have won both games, damnit.
It was 13-7 with 10 mins remaining. Moon fumbled late in the game which put KC at somethink like the Oiler 10 and they eventually scored the deciding points a couple of plays later.
And again, Manning (ranked #15) does? Again, that last intro wasn't really his fault. Again, 35 points in a playoff game should be enough of a cushion for a defense to protect. Yes Moon shares some blame. I'm not saying he is the greatest QB ever. However, you are holding the losing (TEAM aspect) against him, and the list is not exactly full of "winners" (again, see Manning).
Damn! I'm slipping. Yeah it shows KC scoring 14 unanswered points to take a 21-13 lead. We went back to get the score to 21-20, but then Montana took them down the field for a final score of 28-20.
I never said I agreed with Mannings ranking. In fact, guys like Manning, Fouts and Moon share the same type of category: Great stats, but couldn't get it done in the playoffs. I think guys like Kelly, Marino ...they are in the next class: Great stats, good playoff guys, but couldn't win the big one. And then guys like Elway, Marino, Favre, Montana, Young, Bradshaw, Staubach, Aikman, etc ....they are at the top of the class. Joe Namath shouldn't be on that last anymore than Trent Dilfer should be.
I remember much more about the KC loss than the Buffalo one. Was rooting so hard for Moon to get over the hump (not to mention the Oilers as a team). Moon was drilled in that game. Was sacked at least 7 or 8 times (maybe more) and was knocked down and hit countless other times. I think Munch was knocked out of the game due to his bad knees. Anyway, I see Carr get nailed every game and I always think about that KC loss. KC's defense that game was some of the best I've ever seen.
Doug Williams? we scored 31 points in the buffalo game on offense. the defense and special teams should have been able to hold that lead, especially after dishman made it 35. we crushed the same buffalo team 27-3 in the last game of the season. in '93 we put up scores of 21, 30, 28, 28, 24, 38, 27, 23, 33, 19, and 24. that doesn't sound like defenses were figuring anything out.
I agree I think the Run and Shoot could still work only needs minor tweaks [like a tight end set] I figured a two tight end 2 wide out and 1 back set could have been similar with more run support Rocket River
