While technically Moochie is a backup PG, he has a much larger role than any other backup PG in the league (save maybe Bobby Jackson last season). He plays a good amount of minutes, and is almost always playing all of the 4th quarter. While it feels like we should have been able to get Mooch for less, I think Moochie for a little over 3 mil a year is better than anyone else who is available for the minimum.
Good point, Sam. While I can see how he got the dough for Dream and Moochie, both were very loved by the teams they signed for, I still can't figure out how he talked New York into that contract. And I can praise him for that deal much more, because it didn't screw the Rockets over. But he better enjoy it, because I have a feeling eventually the owners are going to all band together and have the guy assasinated.
Will, I couldn't agree more. I say, if the Rockets are looking to spend that type of cash...maybe put Mooch in a S&T for Mase perhaps, or M Jax. I agree that he is a fan favorite etc but there are other backup pt guards that can do what Mooch does. In fact, correct me if Im wrong, If something (God for bid) were to happen to Stevie, wouldn't Cat be the pt guard?
NJ Rocket,You are right,if something were to happen to Francis,Cat would have to run the point, but then we would have nobody who could start at the shooting guard spot. Our only alternative would to put Rice at SG,but then that would expose the two rookies,Griffin and Morris who would have to play significant minutes at the 3,which they aren't ready to do yet.
I'm sure Mooch and Cat would would split the time at PG should Wink go down. Cat would not play 100% PG. -krosfyah
Wow, thats really steep for a backup PG. 13 million for 4 years is 3.35 million per year. Where is all this cap money comin from --- from what I know we were only 1.56 million under the cap and we signed Torres for some of that. Doesn't seem to add up?
good point guards are hard to come by. I think mooch is worth it. And I think he's going to get the minutes to warrant that price tag. However, I think those minutes will come from him being showcased. We're awfully slight up front, and mooch is definitely going to end up being worth something in a trade. The more he makes, the more we can take back.
They damn well better sign him! That song took FOREVER! Moo-chia adds something to the Rockets outside of his hair and his skeeeels. He adds character. On and off the court, he adds character, just like Bull did. My son is five and loves The Mooch. Clutch scares the $h!t out of him just like Junction Jack and Orbit. But he LOVES Moochie. Once he is inked I am going to make a push to get The Rockets organization to use 'What's on your Head?' at games. I still haven't heard if Air Norris has listened to the song. Any insiders got the scoop? clm
Lance had an interesting comment on 610 this morning, that the whole reason for signing Torres was to get the club (minimally) over the cap, so they could then use their exception to sign Moochie. Pretty tricky, that Dawson fellow....
Didn't we already have Moochie's Bird rights? I thought people have been saying all summer that we didn't have to worry about using cap space for Moochie because of his bird rights. What are the restictions of signing someone to a Bird contract?
Personally, Chance, I am of the opinion that the airing of your song is what made Moochie finally come to his senses (or the Rockets org... whichever gave in first). And I would like to take this moment to thank you for doing your part in bringing back my favorite Rockets player.
Well if that's the case here are my next three songs: 1. "I was only Kidding" Done to OMD's 80's hit Dreaming. It's a song sung in my (awful) Nigerian accent that recounts that Jokester Hakeem Olajuwan's mischief in his practical joke about leaving the Rockets. Dream comes back home and leads us to another series of rings. 2. "Mr. Mo Roboto" done to Styx's Mr. Roboto. It recounts an amazing new medical procedure which cuts Mo Taylor's recovery time down to a scant two weeks. 3. "Oops! I passed it again" done to Brittany Spears (hottie) Oops I did it again. In this song some unknown force causes The Cat to pass the ball with the frequency and skill of John Stockton. Chance
Lance would be incorrect on this. He's referring to the Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agent (aka Early Bird), and it wouldn't matter about Torres. You can go over the cap to use it, and you can use it while under the cap. According to my calculations, Moochie's base starts somewhere around 2.7. I can't help but think of this as a benchmark type of signing. Kind of like when McIltruck got his extraordinary amount a few years back, based on limited minutes.
I for one will be glad when they have Moochie singed. Steve and Mobes can't both play 48 MPG, plus it gives you a dynamic 3 guard set to run if we need a different look. Our guard play is what will give us a chance against the best in the league, the last thing we need to do is weaken our tremendous strength. If we were close enough to the cap that singing Torres would get us over it, surely we would do it. Not for Moochie, but just to have another decent salary slot for a back-up bigman. I am quite sure we will find some useful way to spend the mid-level level exemption if we now have it.
I suggest making a song out of Led Zeppelin's "Babe, Come Home." I love that song. Dream, Dream, Dream, Coooommmmmeee Home Oh yeah, you been gone too long
That's AWFUL! Hey, if you don't like the guy, that's fine but you want them to have him singed? Like when fire burns your arm hair? Man, that's harsh. clm
