So I guess this has become the new "I'm an insider, you're an insider" thread?

Look, I really don't care. All I ask is if you are going to fake it (no I'm not calling anyone like Cod, or Plow fake... I DON'T KNOW), at least be entertaining and don't be a pompous douche about it like "some folks" around here.

If you have a problem with people not believing you, please dm the mods or clutch in order to get vouched for. I'm sure they will keep your identity & connections confidential.

If you don't want to go through that process you really cannot get offended when people are skeptical & give you a hard time.

    .........

Lastly there is a big difference between "I called X move" vs. I know a move is about to happen due to insider knowledge. Anyone could have "called" a move like the Rockets acquiring a point guard, and Ty Lawson, Rondo, Dragic, Bledsoe, and even Rubio could have been bet on easily by someone trying to get rep for knowledge.

Right now the Rockets only real position to upgrade would be the PF spot or the SF spot. I could post a cryptic post now that hinted that I had insider knowledge that Durant is 100% coming to Houston next July. If he signs in Houston does that make me an insider??... around here it seems that way.

Anyways, keep it fun and entertaining guys. We got what... 42 days left without basketball....

When is media day and training camp supposed to start? I know it's not games but it's still Rockets basketball.

Usually training camp starts two weeks before the first preseason game, and media day is the first day of training camp unofficially. Not sure if its been announced yet, but I assume around the 21st of 22nd of September.

After media day we get about two weeks worth of coverage from Clutch and co. when they get invited to the end of practices to record some video here and there.

So realistically about 3 1/2 weeks left of the doldrums of the NBA Summer then things should start picking back up.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but I pulled this from Larry Coon's FAQs:

While the Rockets would still be significantly squeezed under the hard cap (to the point where the lack of cap flexibility will still probably outweigh the ability to lock up Harrell longer-term), this would at least allow the Rockets to sign Harrell with the MLE and still field a full (20-man) training camp roster. But keep in mind that those 17th-20th players may merit partial guarantees that collectively push the Rockets further towards the hard cap.

Daryl Morey and the Rockets always manage to surprise me with one move or another, but I still think it's unlikely that Harrell gets an MLE deal.

My two biggest complaints with this forum:
I don't know why people on this forum consistently find it so hard to believe that just because a trade didn't go through, that that somehow negates the possibility that teams ever could have had discussions at some level that these insiders have made us privy to that for whatever reason didn't get consummated.

I also don't get the over-analyzation that goes along with those who do believe in the information our insiders provide. Just because we get tipped off that Morey inquired about player X, doesn't mean Morey is going to try to get player X at any cost. I walk into a garage sale and I ask about the price of a lot of things, but I'm only walking out of there if there is something that's a really good value. Maybe I go to several garage sales and ask for the price of a number of things and at the end of the day I only take home the best value I find(if there is a deal to be had) and on some days you go home empty handed because everything is overpriced. Morey basically does this with players.

Let me know when you have a better track record than "'holics." Maybe then it won't be laughable that your signature is calling him out :p

I think we understand this. Part of the over-analysis will tend to dismiss some of the mentioned inquiries with other teams.

    Hey....it's a loooooooooong offseason.

Actually the issue is that you two guys find a way to make every thread about D-Mo vs. Jones. I don't think there's any disagreement on that point. Except from you two(?) guys.

I think you have to cut the DMo Jones guys some slack in this thread. We're talking about signing or not signing a PF. The two power forwards ahead of him significantly impact this.

That being said, I'm sure you can look through the Ty lawson traded to Houston thread and find more of that crap. It's getting absurd, but it's better than the Lin fans making every subject Lin related. The Yao only guys were just as bad.

Safe to assume you're talking about Bobby and me here? Let's go through what happened just for the record, Batman.

First, the start of the thread was about whether we should sign Harrell long-term and lock ourselves into the hard cap or not. Here's the OP post:

    Simple enough.

The first mention of Terrence was finsraider below stating he didn't like the idea of all our young PFs being free agents at the same time.

This was a legit, good point, and worthy of consideration. Nobody took umbrage with it. Nobody made it about DMo vs. Jones.

The next mention of Terrence was from myself. I simply stated what I thought the big man rotation would look like if everybody was healthy this coming season since the discussion was about how close Harrell would be to actually playing a substantial role this coming season. Here's my post.

As you can see, I think, barring major injury or trade or major development setback by Capela, or major achievement by Jones in training camp, our big man rotation will be primarily Dwight, DMo, and Capela with everybody else (including Terrence) picking up the scraps. I am basing my opinion on how this season ended. DMo was clearly in front of Terrence in the rotation before he got hurt. And Terrence performed so poorly once DMo got hurt that Terrence himself was demoted to 4th big behind Dwight/Smith/Capela in the playoffs. And he didn't do himself any favors once in the 4th big man rotational spot in the playoffs. So, based on how this season ended, with the development of Capela into the definitive backup to Dwight at the 5 in the playoffs, and with DMo establishing himself as the starting 4 prior to his injury, I think it is quite reasonable to say that barring major injury, trade, or developmental setback, that our big rotation will be primarily Dwight, DMo, and Capela. Nothing unreasonable there. It's simply logic. Not an introduction of DMo vs. Jones debate. Just used logic to reach the conclusion on what our big man rotation will look like in light of HARRELL playing/not playing with Hayes also in the picture as well.

The point was....Harrell likely WILL NOT play a major role here next season barring injury, trade, or significant player development setback......UNLESS he simply explodes in training camp and makes the decision to put him in the rotation immediately a no-brainer. Harrell is going to have to really show it in training camp big time and even then I could see McHale not wanting to trust him as a rookie.

None of that was about DMo vs. Jones.

The next mention of Jones was a minor reference by Jpripper about the possibility of one of DMo/Jones being moved being the only probable way Harrell plays a significant role this season.

No big deal here either. Nothing to see. Totally legit and logical post.

But then we get to PJ's post responding to my post. Here you go:

Here's where the problem starts. That is, by PJ's twisted logic, if you don't think TJ is going to start or be in the top 3 in the rotation then you are delusional, and a D-Mo nut hugger and a TJ hater. And then he continues to state his case by pointing out that TJ was fantastic in the playoffs while ignoring the fact that this thread was about signing Harrell long-term and being subject the hard cap or not signing Harell long-term and not being limited by the hard cap.

So, I'm delusional because I think TJ performed poorly in the playoffs and lost his starting spot that he only got back because of an injury to DMo but he's the beacon of truth that TJ performed fantastic in the playoffs????

Batman, you'll have to ask PJ why he did that. He could've simply stated, "I disagree with your projected rotations. I think Jones was hurt all season and once he gets healthy this offseason he will re-establish himself as the definitive starter next to Dwight. However, none of that really makes a difference in regards to Harrell playing or not playing, does it?"

Because this thread was about Harrell, not about DMo/Jones.

Batman, get off your high horse about Bobby and me twisting threads and making them about DMo/Jones. We did not do that. The poster with the delusional take that made it about DMo/Jones was.....PJ.

Lol, even your summary of your comments goes on for pages about D-Mo vs Jones. How was your post not about D-Mo vs. Jones? If this conversation is about Harrell, as you say, you could have just said 'Dwight, D-Mo, Capela, Jones, and maybe Hayes are all on the depth chart ahead of Harrell.' That's all that matters from your argument as it pertains to the subject of the thread. But, instead you posited your classic D-Mo vs Jones argument that Jones isn't a rotation-worthy player (manifested here by saying Capela will have priority over him) - and then feign indignation when someone takes the bait. By your own timeline, it's obvious you're the one that started the D-Mo vs. Jones sidebar in this particular thread. It's fine to have a hard-on for D-Mo, but you're not going to be able to deny it when everything is written down on a public server for anyone to review.

Because it was about showing you that realistically only 3 bigs are going to play substantial minutes and Harrell is going to have to climb over everybody else just to become the 4th big. Doesn't matter whether you think DMo starts or Jones starts. Same result. Harrell's gotta climb over all these to get minutes. That's why I added unless Capela significantly regresses to the equation. (And I do think that's a distinct possibility. Not completely sold on Capela at this point although I think he's superior to Terrence at either big man spot.)

No, it's not. It's not the depth chart. It's the rotation that makes the difference in playing time. We're only going to go 3 deep at the 4/5 spots with big men. There's going to be a good portion of minutes where we go small and run Ariza/Harden (or possibly Dekker if he is ready) at the 4 with 3 other smalls. There's only 96 big man minutes. Take 30 minutes out of that chunk for Dwight and you're left with 66 minutes. Take another 10 minutes (probably actually more) out for small ball lineups and that leaves you with 56 minutes. That's 56 minutes to divvy up between DMo/Capela/Jones/Harrell....at most. And yes, I put them in that order because that is the order they were in at the close of last season as long as DMo is healthy. IF Capela doesn't regress then he's going to get the rest of the center minutes with Dwight sits. That leaves you with 38 minutes to fill at the 4 spot with DMo/Jones/Harrell.

That leaves scraps for Harrell at best. No matter how you look at it. Even if you think Jones is going to start and go crazy. It still leaves scraps for Harrell unless Harrell just complete knocks it out of the park in training camp (a possibility).

This is simply you wanting to jump on a DMo/Jones debate. If you can't see that Capela is #2 in the depth chart at center barring his severe regression then I don't know what to say to you. Capela is better in the middle defensively than DMo is. He's better defensively in the middle than Terrence is. And having that defensive anchor is a priority. So barring a trade to bring in another center, and barring Capela completely falling out of bed on us (a possibility) then Capela IS the backup center and will get 90-100% of the center minutes when Dwight sits. And any minutes Capela doesn't get in the middle will be because he's in foul trouble, or injured, or the opponent is putting him on the foul line and he's chucking. And if all that happens DMo will be in the middle...not Terrence. But....if all that happens then Terrence will likely see some minutes at the 4. But it'll have to be with Capela's failing or DMo injury.

By the way.....I made NO MENTION of Jones rotation worthiness. You (and others) can read whatever you want to into my posts and then light yourself up. Be my guest. That's your stupidity.

Nothing feigned about it. I get called out here ad nauseum. Every once in a while I just decide to punch back with facts. I did not start the DMo/Jones debate. But....if you wanna go there, I might just finish it for you. And no, I don't have a hard-on for DMo. I think he shown a tremendous improvement last year. But as far as I'm concerned for me to want to keep him long-term, I've still got to see him light up the 3-ball even more than he has. IF....DMo does that this year....I think his value goes up significantly. I'd still be willing to trade him however in a package for an already signed superstar like DeMarcus. ;)

Crawl back under your rock Juan.

Maybe it matters to the fans, but it shouldn't because it doesn't matter to the front office or coaches. When have they (FO, coaches) ever viewed an incoming rookie and contextualized their situation in respect to other veteran players at their positions??

Montrezl is a rookie that hasn't even been signed yet... that's a fact.

Its always possible that a rookie competes or even wins rotation minutes, but its highly unlikely, and those already making ridiculous claims that he's above certain established players in the rotation before he even puts on a Rockets uniform are completely insane.

The comparison would be like saying a senior in college about to get his Engineering degree is more likely to build a high rise building than an Engineer who already has years of experience building large buildings.

    Its absurd.

Now that we're not signing Hayes, can we use use the MLE on Harrell without triggering the hard-cap?

If not, can you explain this a bit more or lead me to a post where this was discussed? Thanks.

No, I think using MLE for Harrell still triggers the hard-cap. Not signing Hayes just leaves us ~$1m further from the top of the apron than otherwise. Once we hit the top of the apron, no more signings, period. I assume the motivation for not signing Hayes is that we do intend to use the MLE and trigger the hard-cap. I haven't done the math, so it's either that Hayes would bring us over the apron making his signing literally impossible, or he'd put us so close to it that no one else could get signed after him.
