His activism was the most impressive part of his life IMHO. He wasn't afraid to speak up when it would have been easier to be quiet. Ali's activism caused him to lose a lot of opportunities, but he still persisted.

    That is admirable.

    RIP

You're underestimating sacrifice and individual spirit.
ali and pat tilman, different end of the spectrum but both held strongly to their convictions. both get my respect equally.

I'm just glad he doesn't have to suffer anymore. He did his time in the ring, but he had to stay fighting the rest of his life. A legend, an inspiration, and one of the greatest humans to walk on Earth. Thanks for everything champ. RIP

On the day of his death, ladies and gentleman. What an incredibly sad, nearsighted individual you are. Hopefully you come of age and open your mind one day young man.

RIP to a truly great Individual.

No, I'm not. You're just being idealistic, and I'm being realistic.

Agree with everything you wrote. I was more a fan of the approach that those others you mentioned took prior to fights as opposed to Ali's approach, but I did appreciate him in the ring and I appreciated his greatness.

I'm not sure if there's a bigger culprit in the arrest of adolescent mental and emotional development of middle class to upper middle class suburban white folks than reading the Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged. The Opiod of an epoch. It's probably comparable to getting punched repeatedly in the face by Frazier/Foreman/Norton/Holmes.

    RIP......the Commodore's mind, circa the 1990s.

I loved Ali. Always have always will...because he was human.

Rest in peace to the G-O-A-T. Despite one poster's jackassery, there is evidence all around to Ali's greatness and what made him truly a special human being.

the things Ali is celebrated for (black separatism and anti-Americanism while under the control of Elijah Muhammad and The Nation of Islam), he largely repudiated later in life

Malcolm X was similarly under the spell of The Nation of Islam, and repudiated them in the last years of his life (before they killed him).

The man just passed away. If you can't say anything kind, or be respectful, maybe you might want to examine your OWN CHARACTER before you start popping off and questioning another man's character.

"When We Were Kings" is worth seeing, if you have not. Just an amazing man.

As often happens there is an effort by some to take something Ali did, that they don't like, and use that to disregard and ignore all of the many other things Ali did with his life. When people point out things they like about Ali, they quickly hold up something they didn't like about Ali to try and pretend like Ali wasn't a good great human being.

By sticking for by his principles he gave up a huge amount of money as a Heavyweight boxing champion. A Heavyweight boxing champion at that time carried even more prestige with it than it does today. He knowingly sacrificed money from the boxing trade as well as from the endorsements that come with it.

Later he got his championship back, and plenty of endorsements as well.

I don't know if he made much out of the deal, but as a very small boy, I actually had a Mohamed Ali action figure.

The way he revolutionized boxing was worthy of about a dozen pages alone. What he did for many many great and worthy causes outside of boxing is worth twice that much.
