Point is, Verse, that YOU made the argument that the Spurs screwed up letting Smith go, that somehow he was the answer against the Lakers; he obviously would not have been. Also, in the regular season, Andersen was not particulary effective against the Lakers, either.

    verse,

Is this Spurs fan actually pretending he didn't want to keep Derek Anderson? Everyone raise their hands if they think Derek Anderson would have an incredible video highlight of slams in Europe like Ginobili's portfolio. Raise your hands if you think Derek Anderson is a better defender than Ginobili.

poor poor Spurs fans. Lose a perfect role player fit SG for Duncan, and they try to reinvent the next guy in his image while saying Derek wasn't the answer.

Wow check this kid out....he kinda looks like Ginobili, doesn't he....

Not if you're team is counting on 25 (or even the 20, but you took 4 shots from somebody else to get them), while the Spurs are just counting on those 6.

    D. Andersen is getting paid 6 mil per - and the Spurs offered more than that - HE DECLINED; If the Spurs had met his demands it would have seriously affected their ability to sign a FA after Robinson retired. Ginobilli is at 1.5 mil per. Forget this season; NEXT year I'm pretty sure I'd rather have Ginobilli PLUS any number of VERY good players who might want to play next to an MVP, a young backcourt, in a new building, with no income tax and, oh yeah, Derek Andersen's MONEY (and more)!

Okay, everybody. This is raising my hackles again as per the idea that 101 6 7 is a runaway algorithm launched by an evil computer genius. Let's see if we can use further provocation to cause further number spewing and a complete meltdown (in that time-tested way that Kirk used to confuse runaway machines like the M5):

Kirk: "But 101 6 7, you are programmed to talk *good* basketball ... to follow *logic* ... to benefit humanity!"

    101 6 7: "affirmative."

Kirk: "Yet when you suggest that Bowen is ... properly rated for his defense, you cause ... *immense* human suffering."

101 6 7: "Does not compute! Bowen is overman! Other humans illogical!"

Kirk: "But these humans ... programmed you..."

101 6 7: "AAAhhhhh! March 8, 1989, Bowen holds other 7th grader to 32% shooting on an 8-ft goal. AAAhhh! December 14, 1983, Bowen schools little brother on nerf hoop! (fizz-pop, smoke pours forth, etc)"

that's a direct quote of what i said. my point is that anderson and smith are the type of player(s) that you need to compliment duncan...not a cheap copy like ginobili. you need the authentic version...not the reasonable facsimile.

    care to make a bet 101 6 7?

kobe will average 25+++ versus the spurs. care to disagree?

Well, I went to a game in seattle and saw him get absolutely torched with my own two eyes by Gary Payton, including on an ISo for the game winning layup in the last possession.

I also don't remember him shutting down kobe, either. I don't have time to look anything up either but I don't believe kobe's playoff ppg were significatnly affected during the WC finals.

You mean the Western Conference SEMIfinals. Christie actually held him to 41.9% in the WC Finals. Bowen didn't faze him.

    poor poor Spurs fans.

OK I ran the numbers - here it is:

Against the league last year Kobe averaged 45% FG percentage and 25.2 pts per game

Against the Spurs W/B. Bowen he averaged.....44.83% and 26 points per game.

I believe that proves your point.

You're right my bad. I just looked it up and it looks like Kobe only shot 35% during the first round vs. Portland.....

so I guess that makes Derek Anderson a better defender than Bruce Bowen AND a better offensive player than Ginobli :p

In the game you refer to, yes Payton made the last shot, but for the game he was 9-24 for 19 pts. Not exactly a great line, for him.

Any why, pray tell, does it matter?

Bowen's "line" is based on the performance of the guy he's guarding. He's not expected to be a factor offensively. I'd be willing to bet, without looking, that Vin Baker didn't outplay Duncan in that game - that his "line" isn't comparable; but that doesn't mean he didn't do his job in that game.

HOLY BOXSCORES STATMAN! I'll take my eyewitness account over your espn.com circumstantial evidence any day the week. I saw a guy who could not stop payton from driving to the hoop at will.

Trust me, he ain't no michael cooper, and all that proves is that my opinion of bowen as an ace defender is different than yours.

What bothered me the most about that sonics game was that EVERYBODY in the entire pacific Northwest knew that GP was going to drive to the hoop on that occasion, yet the Spurs wouldn't double or alter their d at all. The Sonics had nothing else going that night at all, I think Lewis was injured as per his usual, and the biggest offensive threat on the floor at that point other than GP was maybe Desmond Mason or Predrag Drobniak. Istill can't figure out whether it was a mistake or it was just overconfidence in Bowen's D.

So did everybody is S. Central Texas. The spin after the game was that Bowen was expecting a big to come help sooner - but they stayed home. That was pretty much a horrible game all around. But we better not break down too many Spurs - Sonics games here, right?

it matters because as long as high scoring guards get close to their scoring average or better and bwen gets 4-8 points, it's a losing matchup.

"defensive stoppers" at the 2 or 3 are useless. a high scoring 2 or 3 will almost always get their points. you're much better off with a person that might give up 25 but will score 20 themselves. bwen couldn't get 20 in a week.

Individual matchups are important. Individual point totals are not. Lets use Houston as an example. (This is a hypothetical - I'm not suggesting Bowen can shut down Fancis - I'm trying to make a point about the "matchup" debate).

The Spurs put Bowen on Francis. Bowen scores 6 points and dishes 1 assist. Francis scores 10 for the game, and produces his average in assists. By your reckoning Francis has won THIS matchup. Knowing only this from the box score - which team is most likely to win that game?

Or, the Rockets put Ming on Duncan. Ming scores 14, Duncan 15. Am I excited about the Spur's prospects for victory when I am used to him putting up 25? No.

Continuing...high scoring guards DO typically get their point totals; regardless of defender, but if you can affect thier %, it can also have a significant effect on the final score. There, ultimately, is only 1 ball, and if the primary scorer takes 5-6 more shots than normal to get his, it means somebody else didn't get those shots. The most important number in judging a defense, IMO, is opponent %, followed closely by rebounds; misses are irrelevent if you don't control the board.
