With those black shoes, he looks like Eddie Munster to me.

If only he had come along in time to play with Kevin McHale (Herman Munster, on the left there)!

    Some simple math:

If Ginobilli had played 36 minutes, and continued to produce at the same clip:

    13 Pts
    8 boards
    4 Assists
    4 steals

In his FIRST game ever in the NBA - against a VERY good 2 guard. Not bad for a 57th pick. Savior? No - the Spurs already have one of those. Promising - unless you're simply wearing red colored glasses - obviously.

so, does anyone want to run "the simple math" numbers on Oscar Torres for 101 6 7 and describe him as not a savior but promising. Not bad for an *undrafted* player.

also, anyone what to remind 101 6 7 that Cuttino Mobley is not a "very good 2" on defense. Kobe and Christie are going to eat his lunch.

    heypartner,

Go ahead, but you might want to start a new thread. I was trying to stay on topic.

Simple math: if Oscar Torres had played 48 minutes and continued to produce at the same clip he would have scored 32 points against above mentioned Ginobili. Not bad for undrafted player. MVP? maybe not. An All-Star? Obviously.

One Dan Langhi can't-drive-and-play-defense-in-the-NBA thread is enough. And we don't need anymore Oscar Torres should start over Mobley threads this year.

The subtle point I was attempting to make was simply this:

I don't understand why people in this thread are writing that Ginobilli is a bust now, when the numbers simply don't suggest that. That is no less ridiculous than Spurs fans predicting 24 a night from him...

What I heard (had to listen, no TV here) last night was a guy who did some of the things the Spurs hoped he would: ie. pass, drive, steal. He doesn't have to be stellar to be an upgrade in those departments over what the Spurs rolled out last year at the 2 spot (and if he can score 12 a night - he even will outpace Smith in that, as well). ANY upgrade to a team that won 58 games is significant.

    screw the topic,

101 6 7, your moniker makes me think you are actually a runaway computer algorithm unleashed by an evil computer genius. Can you refute this? I'm not saying anything about the points you are making. Rather, I am expressing fear.

No one called Dan Langhi a bust. We just called it ridiculous to expect him to score 24 points a night by driving like he did at Vanderbilt

What I heard (had to listen, no TV here) last night was a guy who did some of the things the Spurs hoped he would: ie. pass, drive, steal.

I liked the way you slipped "drive" in there. Sorta like how the Associated Press writer slipped in a Jordan-esque description of a missed layup. Gino was unable to drive on Cuttino. He was stuffed!

He doesn't have to be stellar to be an upgrade in those departments over what the Spurs rolled out last year

ummm, you mentioned "steals" as one of the things the Spurs hoped for. He most definitely has to be "stellar to be an upgrade in that department" over Bowen. I noticed you didn't mention "shooting," apparently because you know he has no chance to be as stellar as Smith "in that department." You will find this year that it will come down to Gino's reported improvement over Bowens offense versus giving the minutes to Bowens defense and using Steve Smith as a superior shooter at the 2, as well.

You may very well find limited improvement to an actual downgrade to Smith and Bowen. Besides, you need someone to nail the open 17'er in the 4th Quarter against the Lakers. Gino doesn't look like a shooter to me, so your choice might very well remain fielding Bowen in the 4th against Kobe or Smith in the 4th to give Duncan breathing room.

    POLL QUESTION:

Does any one expect Boki to be able to effectively put the ball on the floor this year?

I would think the overwhelming majority will say no.

    Heypartner;

Bowen is a 3, Ginobilli is a 2. I fully expect both on the floor to finish games. Smith (along with Kerr & Ferry) will be in the lineup to finish games if a 3 is necessary. As for whether Ginobilli is a shooter, I, as you, have little to go on other than his record in Europe; where he was described as money from 15 - 18 ft. - but not very reliable from further out. Also, as has been documented, he has been nails in the closing minutes - both in Europe & at the WC. I'm not saying that is what he IS - it is what he HAS BEEN. Obviously ALL is untested against the NBA.

I can see HP, beer in one hand, tail of that T-shirt in the other ("give it to me, you little b**ch, I just said you could look at it, I didn't say you could keep it; dammit, you're gonna make me spill my beer!"), trying to tug the shirt away from the 5 year-old, who's screaming at the top o' her lungs.

A message board is for opinions.....damn...

Well I'm a rocket fan, and actually I liked what I saw of his Ginobi. Remember that this was his first game back from his injury and that he is making the foreign jump.

Personally I thought he had some good drives and nice dribble moves; once he learns what to do when he gets inside the defense, he'll probably be more dangerous.

On the flip side, I thought our defense was good, namely Griffin. So if Ginobilli continues recovering and learning, I'm sure he'll help against say....the mavs, or some other team with no defensive big man.

I expect big things from Nachbar and I'd be hypocritical if I didn't think Ginobilli has some good seasons in him. Do I think Ginobilli will be rookie of the year, or savior? Do I think Nachbar will be our savior or ROY? Doesn't mean they won't contribute and be plusses.

Hehe of course I won't mind watching Griffin and Ming get a couple blocks on Ginobilli during the course of a game. :D

Anyone mind splaining to this Spurs fan what position Bowen plays against the Lakers.

I fully expect both on the floor to finish games. Smith (along with Kerr & Ferry) will be in the lineup to finish games if a 3 is necessary.

Anyone mind splaining to this Spurs fan how the Spurs got beat the Lakers because they lack shooters, not because they need to open Duncan's lane to drivers.

Correction, "ALL is not untested" against Cuttino Mobley. Gino better learn how to shoot 3s, because he's not driving past Cuttino.

poor Spurs fans. Even the ones trying to be reasonable are delusional.

    heypartner,

    1) Few hate the Spurs more than I do. I have suffered them a long time, from Dave Corzine's ugly nose-hair style of basketball onward.

    2) I was NOT at the preseason game.

    3) Oh, did I say preseason? That time of year where Cato looks like he might deserve an extension, where Kwame Brown can post decent numbers, where the Sixers play a 6'4", 380 lb man at the center position. I'm all for the enthusiasm, but Ginobli may end up getting around Cat once or twice before it's all said and done.

Just MHO, and now I can maybe see if I've made it onto the ingore list. ;) Lord knows I'm trying. Whoops -- sorry everybody for the Almighty reference. Some omnicient being knows I'm trying.

the difference is that people aren't running around proclaming nachbar as a potential ROY like they have been for ginobili. ginobili is no closer to ROY than thomas hamilton is to jenny craig.
