Really good read. Honestly, what I gather from it is the tech isn't really there to take advantage of it. It's more than just RAM, but in time it could be a game changer. There could be performance increases, and there could be memory lag issues as well. With a phone that will be outdated in less than 2 years does it really make that big of a difference? Serious question here...
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2013/09/28/ash-64 One of the big deals is that allocating and deallocating memory is significantly faster. iOS apps create and destroy lots of objects. The objective-c runtime takes advantage of this, according to Ash. While 64-bit may not benefit every OS, it seems that Apple is taking advantage of it in their ecosystem. The changes to LLVM with respect to memory have not been trivial. I am not intimately familiar with the details but it doesn't seem 64-but was just a marketing excercise.
Good points. The full benefit has yet to be seen, but the pointer analysis and memory allocation/deallocation is huge for performance in iOS. Speed improvements show even in Anandtech reviews.
All good. I think at the end of the day it makes it easy for someone sitting at work or home to print it and cut it out to see how it fits in the hand since the demo models are not out yet and won't be until launch day I believe. I personally would do that real quick rather then drive down to the store and hold a galaxy or note to get a feel for the size. Once they are actually in the stores to demo, I would just go in at that point.
Missed the release. Question for the tech crowd. How much better is the 6 then the 5, which it appears they are just giving away? The 4.7 one with 64G looks appealing. I have the 3GS now (16G, which is at capacity) and am due for an upgrade. I don't want to leave AT&T because my unlimited data is grandfathered in. Thanks!
If you're coming from a 3GS, both will be a significant upgrade. But since you'll be on contract and presumably not upgrading for 2 more years, I'd probably go with the 6 if your budget allows. even bigger screen improvements, general speed and performance improvements, Touch ID capabilities, significantly better battery life, and you'll be essentially future proofed for the next version or two of iOS updates. The 5/5C are good phones, but the 5 in particular is 2 years old at this point. I'd only go that route if you are looking at the cheapest option. From the 3GS it's still a good upgrade.
May have missed this, but is there a difference between pre ordering through Apple or pre ordering it through Verizon?
If you don't need the larger screen and don't plan on doing mobile payments via tap, and plan on only getting 16gb, the 5S may be good enough for you.
I'd say if the 5S is what he ends up getting then I would wait until the 6/Plus comes out and then he can find a refurbished unlocked one for cheap. That way he keeps his grandfathered data plan (I sorely miss mine ) and won't have to renew his contract.
The bigger screen isn't a big deal but the increased memory and better camera is. I am maxed out on 16GB now.
Does the Plus come with that? I'm thinking about diving into the phablet craze on the iPhone 6. What is the price of the Plus without contract? Is there any benefit of going no contract?
The benefit of going no contract is that you pretty much own the device after you pay for it and, if needed, can take your phone from carrier to carrier like ATT to TMobile or vice versa. Drawback of course is the sky high price since a carrier is not subsidizing the cost.
maybe if you want a good deal. their screens have always been top notch. but, sammy is going the alpha route using premium (metal) materials from this point forward, so you may want to wait. the new galaxy alpha and note are the new beginning. not an iphone fan the least bit, but it's far from lackluster.
Man this is a tough one. As much as I'm an android phone fanatic, my experience is that most of my friends who try samsung as their 1st android experience tend to dislike it. Carrier bloatware + Samsung bloatware drag the phone down with the bigger culprit being the samsung software. Other phones I'd recommend in order. I'll list the features I think that tend to stand out. All of these phones have the 801 processor 5" screen with 32gb most with microSD, except moto X Sony Z3 Great camera with great low light performance Great battery life waterproof PS4 remote play Moto X Near stock android that allow for quick updates. touchless control (talk and activate your phone w/o touching it) Moto Assist (built in app that reads your text to you and lets you respond while driving) Active Display that shows you a quick notification on your screen when you receive it and also activates when you pull it out of your pocket so you don't have to hit the power button. LG G3 Quad HD is sharp but also battery drainer 5.5" in a 5" body Above average battery life with 3K mah battery laser autofocus on camera knock knock gestures HTC One (M8) Stereo speakers awesome build quality cleaner overlay vs the other flagships that use one. Good battery life
Man that watch actually looks pretty sweet. When I heard of apple watch it sounded ridiculous but after the unveiling I'm curious. Particularly interesting is the strapless heart rate monitor. I have a 5 with no real reason to upgrade to a 6. I'd like to see if this watch is a better place to put potential upgrade money.
