Mo Williams available... Could he shore up our PG spot sufficiently?

We have 3 glaring issues to address:

    1. SG backup that can create.
    2. PG depth whether it be a new starter with Alston off the bench or vice-versa
    3. Backup center with some hops and at least the semblance of offense.

I believe backup SG is our biggest priority. Mo Williams would definately solve no. 2. This leads to 2 questions:

    1. Is our first round pick and expirings enough to land Mo.
    2. Is Mo a better player than we can hope to land in the draft.

I think that hoping a 25th pick in the draft will provide a rotation SG is a long shot. I would rather have the proven commodity in Mo and try to meet the other needs some other way.

That being said I'm not sure the 25th pick and expirings will be enough. PG is a sought after commodity. Milwaukee will probably get better offers.

Mo Williams would be a clear and obvious upgrade over Rafer.

In 9 years Rafer has shot over .400 only twice and averages under 6 assists a game. Mo Willliams career average is .444 and he had a career best .480 last year while averaging over 6 assists a game 3 out of the last 4 years.

If we could get Mo Williams then I think it is a no brainer.

If you knew coming into the draft that a player would be a starting caliber point guard that can average .480 F/G percentage, over 6 assists per game and average 17 points a game he would be a lottery pick. So to answer your question...I think the 25 pick is easily worth Mo Williams.

crash- Its almost laughable that throughout this thread, posters want to make Rafer out to be better than Williams. There isn't 1 thing Rafer does better. U can start with any stat u want and williams is better. Not only that, he's young enough to get better. I hear people b**** and moan about a Bibby type pg because rafer is streaky at best, can't finish, and is probably a bench player. Now we don't know if he's on the Rox radar, but he should be. Defenses have to play him for the penetrating drive or mid range pull up. That means space for Yao, lanes for tracy, and a balance to the offense in general. Not only that, late in games, now u have 2 80% ft shooters to ice the game.

yeah, in junk games where nobody cared..

Mo Williams is a great shooter but my cousin tells me he shoots too much for a PG (he lives in Milwaukee area).

Anyways, if we need a PG that shoots, then get him but if we needed somebody to spread the ball, he wouldnt be my first choice

There is one thing... DEFENSE. Mo had an absolutely horrid year on defense last year. Looking at last year alone, his shortcomings on defense overshadows the upgrade on defense over Rafer. However, like I said earlier in the thread, no one on that Bucks team played defense for a second and he did have some okay defensive years before so I think that won't be as big a problem as it was in Milwaukee if he comes to the Rockets.

No one's saying Rafer's great, we're simply arguing that Williams isn't either. It's not like he comes cheap or is guaranteed to be a perfect fit. I'm tired of desperate fans proposing Isiah Thomas-type trades that only work for fantasy rosters. What's next, trading Scola for Zach Randolph? (oMg!! his stats r so much beTTER!1!1!)

You know who else had better stats across the board than Rafer before we acquired them? Steve Francis and Mike James. I'm sure you had them both pegged as better than Rafer, 90% of the board did. It's pretty clear now that even when healthy those guys are incapable of running a team. The fanbases of the last two teams they were on were happy to see them go for nothing. Now bucks fans are anxious to see Mo go, as well. I watch bucks games to watch Yi, and everything they say is true. He does chuck and doesn't play much defense. And don't bring up his assists, Marbury averaged 8 assists for the longest time and he couldn't run a team either.

Don't get me wrong Mo Williams is good player, I would even say he could be all-star, especially in the East as a pg.

But, I like Sessions, because he seems like he could be pass first type of point guard and he did have 24 assist game this past season, which was the most anyone has this decade. Not even Steve Nash or Chris Paul have had that many in regular season game. Also, I watched him against Boston, he is less of shooter (he would have to work on his shot). But, we really need someone who can pass.

Reason I say this is because I think a good to great passer could set up Yao even more than usual (easier opportunities)...and it would help against fronting defenses.

Mo Williams is a very good shooter and above average passer, but he has ball-hog tendacies. But, he would be an upgrade over Rafer and he is young.

I like Sessions, though, but probably unattainable.

Those are our biggest needs but if you think about it Mo williams is not a conventional PG. He can basically take all of Head's minutes (which would make him expendable). Rafer could come off the bench with Mo at the 2 and Tmac/Battier at the 3. We would still have the same height problems we had with Head but atleast Mo can create for himself and others.

Good point. Not ideal but better. I think getting Mo is more reasonable than some of the pie-in-the-sky ideas like Maggette, Artest, etc. We just don't have much trade-bait outside of Yao, T-Mac, and Scola. If you make them untouchable then settling for an improvement at pg and a slight improvement at SG depth, would be a good off-season for the Rockets.

If you could get Mo Williams without giving up any core pieces, then it is an upgrade in every sense of the word and you go for it....

If it costs you some essential core players......then you don't do it.

The setting up Yao experiment has stopped one year ago. Adelman wants Yao to set up for his teammates.

we have TMAC who is the best point forward.

we need someone who can put the ball in the basket to make those passes relevant to the win.

"The Suns are also exploring the idea of acquiring a second first-round choice. Doing so might cost them Leandro Barbosa or Boris Diaw. "If we could capitalize on (the depth of the draft) and get more than one (first-round pick), we would," Griffin said."

Why not give up the 1st round pick and get Leandro Barbosa. I'll take him over any PG even MO Williams. And Barbosa will be the starter...he's too good.

The priority of the Rockets should be

    1) Back up SG;
    2) Resign Landry;
    3) Other improvements (i.e., trade for Mo Williams)

Because Barbosa is worth much more than the #25 pick in the draft. We won't give up Battier or anything worthwhile, not while Phoenix is weaker than before they made the Shaq trade.

You are right the 25th pick won't net Barbosa who would be awesome in RA's system. I would give up Battier in a heartbeat for Barbosa. He would give us depth at both PG and SG, solving 2 problems and creating one. SF's are much easier to find than a combo guard of Barbosa's quality.

You know it's the offseason when a thread about some overpaid scrub named Mo Willie is 5 pages long.

You know its the off-season and the Rockets don't have a chance at anything better than Mo Williams. Guys like Mo Williams merit discussion because that is the caliber of player we have a shot at.

MrButtocks- When u bring up Francis and James vs Williams, we're talking about guys over 30 vs a 25 yr old who is getting better. Its not irrational nor illogical to put in the tape, grab the pen and writing down impact plays. U can do that on poor teams as well as good teams. One of the sticking points is he's gotten better every yr and is still 25.

For those bringing Yi into the conversation, why should it matter what one of the softest 7ft ers to ever play in the nba say? How is chucking 14 atts/per when ur clearly the 2nd best player? Like I said, what's not to like about a highly productive 25 yr old pg? Thinking that Rafer is going to be the starter on a championship quality team is one reason why they have been 1 and done. Rafer is a bench player who couldn't start on no western contender. Show me a 39% shooter starting on any playoff team.
