I don't think they should be given the benefit of the doubt. Despite this being a rare case, upper management should be prepared to make quick decisions after being provided information on the issue.

I somewhat disagree with this. Because it's so rare, you throw caution to the wind by temporarily suspending play. And because of the suspension of play, they were able to make a more informed decision.

I don't think an adverse event like this has ever happened in professional sports (to my knowledge), and you see all these people on Twitter saying that they've seen this before (commotio cordis), but in adolescent sports and usually involving some sort of projectile. And even now, more than 13 hours after the incident, the world outside that hospital still doesn't have a definitive diagnosis of what it was. Could be CC, could be something else.

There are a lot of things to criticize about the NFL, but I think everything was handled correctly. Everyone was given time to gather their thoughts, figure out more about what might have happened to Hamlin, and eventually, the right decision was made to suspend/postpone the game.

I'm not an NFL historian at all. Is there precedent for suspending a game and restarting it? I've done some searching, and it seems a few games have been cancelled due to unsafe conditions on the field, but I can't figure out if those were mid-game.

I assumed they would just re-start the game where it was paused.

Sucks for the ticketholders. At the very least they're out another tank of gas. Probably new parking fees for any private lots, too. And that beer ain't going to be free, either.

My two cents: if the game is pointless for standings and playoff seedings, they may just call it as non-played. But if it impacts either it will need to be made up sometime.

Unless they are going to play the rest of the game by tomorrow night, which I think is a stretch, I wonder if they just cancel it and then rank for playoffs based on win percentage? Seems like the only realistic option

Agreed. They play again on Sunday so I don't see how that's possible.

The game was actually important in that regard.

I think it's a complete stretch. I don't think the headspaces for most of the players, on either side, are right, yet.

I wonder if they'll just count it as a 'tie.' Even if they do play again somewhere down the line, it's too difficult to schedule, especially since the 1 seed is on the line.

Purely speaking about football and seeding, if the NFL does indeed count it as a tie, the Chiefs might come out of the AFC as the 1 seed just because of the outcome, assuming the Chiefs win their next game.

Unfortunately, this game was one of the most important games this season.

If the Bills won, they would have the overall tiebreaker between themselves and the Chiefs, giving the Bills the 1 seed heading into the final week of the season. (Chiefs 2, Bengals 3)

If the Bengals won, they'd have the tiebreaker between themselves and the Bills (I think), giving the Bengals the 2 seed and dropping the Bills to the 3 seed. (Chiefs 1)

If Bills-Bengals went to a tie, KC just needs to win out to secure the 1 seed. If the Bills beat the Bengals, then they'd need to win out to secure the 1 seed, I think.

Regardless, I don't know how they can schedule a make-up game without pushing the entire postseason back an entire week.

Yeah didn't see any CPR when he fell to the ground. Dude was there for awhile until medics showed up. Brain damage could be severe.

Honestly feel bad for the broadcasters, both Aikman/Buck and the trio in the studio. There was nothing to fill the air with, and the broadcast kept going back to the trio who had to keep repeating some variance of "thoughts and prayers for Hamlin" because they had nothing to report. Was really awkward.

interesting that the NFL is denying the 5 minute warm up thing, but Joe Buck and ESPN state they were in communication with the league when saying that several times on-air...doubt Buck just made that up out of thin air

NFL with a weak attempt at damage control?

Not to play devil's advocate for the NFL, but I think they were just operating on if whatever Hamlin's issue was (at the time), was your standard concussion or minor-injury-that-still-required-vehicular-assistance. Obviously, it looks and sounds really bad in hindsight, because it portrays the NFL as "get that dude off the field - we have a game to play!"

Weird for the NFL to have that particular "5 minute rule" in place, though. I guess it's to prevent a team from embellishing or exaggerating an injury or something.

According to Pat McAfee, Troy Vincent (NFL executive VP of football operations) said the NFL never said anything about 5 minutes or anything of that nature. So if Buck is saying someone was in his ear about 5 minutes and the eVP is denying it, then who the heck was on the other line with Buck? lol

Couldn't that impact all sorts of player contract incentives though? Like if you're just a few carries short of an RB contract bonus or a few tackles short for an LB, etc? Maybe those aren't so common.

I saw a ton in Jimmy G's contract this year, which ended up to work well for him, as he originally anticipated playing very little this year.

    I don’t believe the NFL

Joe Buck said the information came from ESPN’s rules expert John Parry who was in direct communication with the NFL

Joe Burrow was even out there starting to warm up…the coaches from both teams met and decided against resuming
