the problem really is that Kimbo hasn't fought anyone worth anything but the media is hyping him up like he's on Mandalei(sp) Silva's level. it's un-deserved. i mean, when you watch the fight with your buddies, at least one person is going to say, no way he can take someone with a some skills. until he fights someone that's good, he's going to get that treatment. i'd like the cinderella story, but he's a circus act right now.
I agree with the article above. As a casual fan I really found the EliteXC stuff to be highly entertaining, and look forward to watching more. What I (and I'm sure many others) like to watch are gory knockouts. Cheap thrill I know, but it's just fun to watch. By having JV fighters, CBS elevated the likelihood of knockouts. I've watched enough MMA to realize that the technique was horrible, only that Villasenor guy was very skillful, and the rest was like brawlers like early days of UFC... when there were a ton of KOs. I also watched the WEC middleweight championships fight yesterday. I was also enthralled by that. Great pace, great technique, and great heart by the fighters (esp. Jens Pulver who took a lot of hits). Still though... would have liked to see a knockout. 2 men enter, 1 man leave. I like that.
i thought the undercard fights were more entertaining. especially the women mma fighters. that one woman (w/ the corn rows) eye swole up like an apple after she got popped in the face.
isnt boxing your sport then? i too like to see the big knockout punches...but only once in awhile. i must be in the minority though..i like watching the ground game more.
Honestly, he reminds me a lot of Mr. T. Mr. T was a toughman... he wasn't a polished fighter... he had it rough and had a great personality/head on his shoulders. I don't know too much about Kimbo but you can just tell he's seen some hard times. You have to take the promotions with a grain of salt. The bottom line is that they worked. He trained his butt off and beat some C-level competition (although I think it was rigged with the testicle ear). I'll def watch it again if they do the same Saturday night fights. Does anyone know if they still do the toughman competitions? I'd love to see him fight in that. I believe that's how Butterbean got started off.
this doesn't deserve it's own thread so, but i was wondering, do you think a 5'6" faber can kick the arse of an average 6'3" well built brawler on the street?
I see ads on tv for em every once in awhile. i've heard at those though, people get real rowdy and start fighting in the crowd
LOL that would not surprise me. I remember it as tournament style. But these guys were just tough bastards and not polished fighters.
Average? yeah. Anyone with decent training, likely not. Most of these guys are much stronger than the average man as well. Functional strength.
Another negative article by Yahoo -- not a surprise -- how dare CBS tarnish the great and noble image of MMA fighting. _____ It would be interesting to see some high quality pro boxers go at it with just MMA style gloves, but with the same boxing rules in place.
