Cauliflower Ear http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cauliflower_ear Cauliflower ear (also hematoma auris or perichondrial hematoma) is a condition most common among wrestlers, rugby players, mixed martial artists, and boxers. If the external portion of the ear suffers a blow, a blood clot or other fluid may collect under the perichondrium. This separates the cartilage from the overlying perichondrium that is its source of nutrients, causing the cartilage to die. This leads to a formation of fibrous tissue in the overlying skin. When this happens, the outer ear becomes permanently swollen and deformed, thus resembling a cauliflower. Headgear that protects the ears is worn in wrestling and rugby (where it is called a "scrum cap"), many martial arts, and other contact sports to help prevent this condition. Cauliflower ear is often the source of pride for wrestlers and fighters. Thus, they disdain the protective gear. Treatment When fluid collection in the outer ear occurs, it is important to contact a doctor immediately and have it treated. The doctor will evacuate the fluid and apply a compressing tie to the outer ear to reconnect the perichondrium and the cartilage. The compressing tie must be left in place for some time, generally 10 days, to prevent the fluid from building up again. Another treatment involves the use of leeches to drain blood, reduce internal pressure, and promote bleeding.

Right just saw it and have to say, there was a lot of hating in this thread considering what I just saw! Kimbo did well to come back and win that one. He looked stuffed after the end of the second. A few key things.... Like most here, Im not sure why the ref told them to stand up at one point. At the end of the second, I think the ref didnt stop it because while Kimbo was on the ground getting hit, he wasnt getting knocked unconcious and he wasnt cut, and they tend to be the reasons why Ive seen fights stopped in that position. As for the stoppage that eended the fight, ten more second and it would have ended in a big knockout anyway. Some people dont like Kimbo and I dont understand why. He has never claimed to be anything more than just a fighter, and the reason he is where is he now is because people want to see him fight. Lets face it, of all the top MMA fighters, there are maybe a handfull that could claim to be a true main event fighter that the guy in the street would go out of his way to watch. Kimbo is one of them. I personally think his management would be better off trying to get him into fights with shorter rounds. He gets gassed after 5 minutes. Im sure Elite XC wouldnt turn him away from 4 or even 3 minute rounds and there would be opponents who would still take him on. Unlike boxing where the rules have been set in stone just about forever, MMA is more about the pure fight, so I have no problems with different round times and stuff like that if thats what some fighters find better to perform in. Sure keep the championship fights locked in at 5 minutes, but I think it would be opened up more if the fights had more flexible rules.
So I got to thinking about it, and Kimbo Slice is the modern day Rocky. When he put his hand up to indicate that he was okay, I got truly excited and I was rooting for Slice to muster up the courage to keep going. This is a truly rags to riches story, because in the back of all our minds, we know Kimbo isn't the most talented guy, but we want him to Win because he has so much heart.
Completely agree. I fell asleep at 7:45 and woke up at 8:30. I was pissed, but I didn't miss anything. And then the next fight didn't start up until 9pm.
Kimbo made a couple of odd mistakes when he would take Thompson down in the reverse headlock and slam his head down like a DDT pro wrestling move. This would work like a charm on concrete, but in the ring it just put Kimbo in a horrible position -- on his back with Thompson on top ready to strike. Kimbo did this in the 2nd round as I recall after he had Thompson rocked and it almost cost him the fight. CBS made some mistakes with the presentation -- they need to speed things up, but overall it was fun and good to see some pro fighting back on national TV.
Not to say that the Yahoo article is wrong, but isn't Yahoo teamed up with UFC? That seems to be quite a conflict of interest there. Again, they're probably justified with all their Elite bashing, but it just doesn't look Kosher.
The reason the ref told them to get off the ground the first time was because there was no constant action going on. Nobody wants to see guys just lay on each other for 5 minutes. You have to keep the action moving. At the position they were in, neither guy could do much damage.
yeah I don't know why people are confused about the 1st time they stood them up. the 2nd time when the ref was warning them he would stand them up later in the 2nd round was odd to me. thompson was clearly in a dominant position and he was being active and completely controlling kimbo. I dunno...last night certainly wasn't the best run mma event that I've seen but I have hope they will get the kinks worked out in the future. also, has anyone seen any ratings numbers?
Like someone stated earlier, the dude's name is sean gannon and he is/was not just a Boston cop, he fought in UFC I believe so don't act like he was some random dude off the street. Anyway, i can't hate on Kimbo. The dude came up from street fighting and is now a prime time event on network TV, earning money as a pro fighter. Thats like someone getting noticed while playing playground basketball and getting a contract to play pro basketball. I can't hate on them for that.
The goofy match up possibilities with Kimbo are fun -- Slice vs. Butterbean -- who wouldn't want to watch that...
MMA diehards can say what they want, but Kimbo is the best thing goin for their sport right now. I think they're taking themselves way too seriously when they hate on this guy. Besides being fun to watch, this guys is a great story. He's in his mid-30s and he came from NOWHERE to gain national fame and recogintion, then steps in the ring and wins against a pro fighter. I know one thing, the next MMA fight that I watch will be Kimbo's next fight.
It's just one of those things...true fans of MMA I think hated last night because it was sloppy and amateurish while people who have had little to no experience enjoyed it because it was different and because of Kimbo. From what I saw of the ratings from 8-10, the ratings grew throughout the show, which is always great news. So we'll see.
I haven't watched much MMA and I went in looking for Kimbo to do well. But other than the few times he was able to box, he looked like ****. His ground game has a loooooooooong way to go. I also thought they stopped the fight prematurely and I wouldn't be surprised if EliteXC took measure to ensure a Kimbo victory. A loss by their biggest marketing tool on national TV would have really sucked for EliteXC. Kimbo lost the first 2 rounds and needed a knockout and then bam, he got a TKO. There were worse exchanges in the previous 2 fights where they didn't stop it.
I'm definitely not a MMA diehard, and I like Kimbo (despite this bad fight), but I don't necessarily think this is true. MMA (in particular UFC) has been gaining in popularity for much longer than just the last couple Kimbo fights. Obviously this primetime special is a different type of event, but he's not exactly the thing that will 'make or break' MMA. It's been doing pretty well. And Kimbo's story is a little different, but it's not exactly like the other MMA/UFC stars don't have some similar qualities. A lot of them 'came up from nowhere' with the sport.
I don't know the history, but why is everyone so interested in him? Based on his fight last night he looks like a below average fighter that would get slaughtered in the UFC. So why are so many people obsessed with him?
