big difference. you arm gets more sore during an actual game. dunno why, but it's true. if this was the case. all pitchers would throw an inning during regular games.
I don't watch a lot of baseball, but I remember a lot of time it took Roy a while to get into the game. I don't understand why he was put in for this situation.
There is not one logical reason for making that move what so ever. When you are at risk of going down a near insurmountable 3-1 you don't save your best pitcher in the bullpen for a moment that might not happen. You play for the win now moment.
Not in that situation I do not agree. Bottom of the 9th, hitters are coming in aggressive, gonna be swinging on first pitches and try to put a lot of things in play. Oswalt is very good pitcher, but he is much more a contact pitcher than punchout strikeout pitcher. His strikeouts are due to command and confusion, which you can work on starting in a game developing the the strike zone and using players being less aggressive to get 1st strikes and getting them in a whole. In this situation you want the strike out guy, the guy who will only allow the run if someone catches up to him with the HR. You do not pick the guy who is more likely to allow a rally from contact and a run to score via singles and a sac fly.
Oswalt is a better starter yes. But you rarely see a starting pitcher come out of the bullpen for this exact reason. I just don't see why when you have your closing pitcher available you don't bring him in. The Giants didn't bring in Sanchez over Wilson because the scenario didn't call for it. It was only the 9th inning, not the 15th.
This is why Oswalt is a starter and not a closer. I love the guy but this was a tough situation to bring him in on two games rest. Plus if Halladay wins tomorrow Roy is going to have to go again on three days rest.
This was such a desperation move. Maybe Lidge comes in and gives up the winning run anyways, but you got to go with Lidge who is going to more comfortable in this situation than Oswalt.
Absolute pandemonium in SF right now. Watching the local news now, and Charlie Manuel is about to have an aneurysm. The old man is shaking at the podium at the post game press conference.
Apparently, Oswalt told the pitching coach in 8th inning that he is available and they went with him. I don't follow baseball as closely as basketball but I had weird feeling feeling about brining in Oswalt at that point. I suppose with hindsight it is very easy to second guess this move.
I think both pitchers will be at their absolute best unlike game 1. You got to like the Giants right now, they been able to find a way to get the clutch hits.
So both the Phillies and Yankees are at the brink. If there were any two teams that could possibly come back from these deficits I think it would have to be them.
Oswalt coming in was a huge mistake, I can not remember him doing well coming out of the bullpen EVER and Lidge was ready to go, that should have been a no-brainer. Two things I hate that the Phillies did was walking the leadoff man after taking the lead in the 5th and not moving the runner over 2nd to 3rd with less then 2 outs, they paid dearly for both. Rollins maybe an MVP but he HAD to move Werth to 3rd with no one out, his out might be the nail in their coffin.
